In retrospect, CNN was better in the early 90's but still had some fake news even then. Who remembers the Charles Jaco scam? Wolf Blitzer has always been kind of a goober, too.

In all honesty, besides the agenda, the 24 hour news cycle created what we are seeing today... If they simply reported the news, it would just repeat over and over and over, pretty much same thing... So, they have to "discuss" and put their stamp on things... Or at least they think they do...

At some point news became entertainment. Journalists discussing their opinions on the news became more important then actual news and has given the media an inflated ego. One of the great things about Trump being elected is that it was a gut punch to the media, they realized they don't have as much influence as they thought they did.

Same thing that happened to MTV, The History Channel, NatGeo, Weather Channel, Food Network, and other theme channels that started off as a good idea.
They built a base and earned a slot on cable and satellite lineups based on decent programming. Then they realized they could make more money showing reality shows about housewives, midgets, pageant moms, and shouting head segments instead of producing the material that earned them their spot.
The audience is so full of morons that the plan works every time. Pick any cable channel and watch the evolution.

I'm old enough to remember when Ted Turner was bitching about how they would never allow anyone "conservative" like him to have a media presence.
It'll be an awkward search, and he may have been drunk when he said it, but it's out there.
