Once they can call it a “universal” background check they can then start to define and pack it with what they want universal to mean.
Sooner or later when the NRA is defined as a white nationalist “hate” group along with sons and daughters of confederate veterans and other groups you would be prohibited to own a gun if you were ever a member of these organizations.
Maybe a bit of a exaggeration but they would get to set the parameters of everything that disqualifies you under the term universal.

Actually, much more insidious than that.
To transfer any gun in any situation, you must complete a background check or the transfer is illegal.
Your father or mother or brother sister, etc suddenly dies. The guns cannot be transferred to the son, daughter, etc, because a background check was not done. Those guns are now illegal because the legitimate owner did not have a background check done.
The government confiscates those guns.

I could guess that it’s probably a background check if you buy a gun from a private seller. I have bought many guns and have never not had a background check.

And this can never happen - practically impossible.
Perhaps they could run a check on any weapon involved in a firearm crime and trace its ownership thru federal records and the last guy on the list needs to explain what happened with that particular firearm - If he sold it to some stranger then he may be held to some liability. If he sold/gave it to a friend/family member then go to that person as the last possessor of the firearm and repeat the process.
I am NOT in favor of unregulated/undocumented sale of firearms to unknown people without some sort of 'background check' - Need to be a responsible gun owner. If you are not a liscened dealer you DO NOT NEED to be selling firearms to the public at large.
NOW - when a leftist begins advocating for "universal background checks" you can bet that what they REALLY mean is "have you ever been a conservative or voted for a conservative??" as the root question they want to use as an excuse to disarm the rational public.
SO - I absolutely REFUSE to consider compromising on ANYTHING a radical leftist Democrat advocates for - regardless of the flowery language they use to 'justify' it - ALL DEMOCRATs at the moment are DISHONEST Bad Faith agents whose goal is subversion. Reject them wholesale.

Actually it doesn't matter what they say because it will be a lie. What they want is to take our guns from us and right after that our 1st Amendment rights would be kicked out the door also.
