They can call bullshite after a set procedure occurs (pursuant to the law).
The problem here is we have a lot of demand for access to that process and little supply. The court system is backed up. The people who do show back up to court almost always get deported.

Is it a matter of changing US law to make the waiting room outside the border rather than inside the country, or is there some international treaty in control here?

That only works if the other country agrees. Remain in Mexico did this and was very effective.

Get rid of all government assistance (welfare, SNAP food benefits, Medicaid) for legal US citizens who have made no effort to work for more than six months. Tell them that they will either have to do the jobs that illegals do in the US or they’ll do without.
One of the reasons for the massive illegal invasion is the demand for people to do less desirable jobs that could be filled with legal US citizens who are currently on government assistance. Our citizens need to work in the US - not illegals.

Finish the wall. Put military units on the border with instructions to allow no person to set foot on US soil. Start rounding up and deporting all illegals. End DACA and TPS.

I mean it's really as easy as closing the border (finish wall) and to reinstate standard migration practices.
they should immediately deport any illegals that pop up in justice system. and actively be hunting and deporting others.
of course, they won't do any of this. but if we had competent and invested govt this could be cleaned up in 2 years at the most. instead, it will destroy the country.

Detention centers and then deportation. This includes all that have entered illegally. Build the wall and send the military to the border to enforce. Put pressure on Mexico like Trump did. This is not that hard.
