Zach, as I've said, I served as a Consultant to the SG. I am keenly aware of the office limitations and capacity. I laid those out for you. We could probably gut the Offices of the SG, the NIH, the CDC, let HHS do its thing and you'd never notice the difference . . .

That is to say you'd never notice the difference . . . until you the difference noticed you.

I agree with this. In fact, the CDC had already come up with the idea of labeling guns as a disease. So this new guy is not coming up with an original idea. It's what burocrats do.

If that is the case what exactly was the point in holding up his appointment?

Thank GOD!! I was beginning to wonder when we would get another Surgeon General. How much longer would we have survived without one?

Didn't Elders push for more masturbation? Or was that someone else?

Elders suggested we teach masturbation in elementary school. She was a hoot. I was so depressed when Bill Clinton fired her.

He's openly advocated physicians talking to their patients about the "evils" of guns. But he was confirmed because of what that moron Cruz did in regards to fighting the spending bill over the wkend. His actions opened the door for a lot of similar confirmations.

Exactly how did Cruz cause the confirmation process to proceed ?

Really curious not up on senate rules.

Seems the confirmation process is totally controlled by Reid for remainder of this congress term.

She recommended it be taught to 1st graders. I had no clue about it in 1st grade.

It was a procedural matter in that, apparently, by pushing for a roll call vote on the spending bill itself, he opened the door to voting on stalled confirmations. I don't know the specific language but several Republicans were quoted as being extremely pissed off at him for opening that door. Reid did not have enough Democratic votes to get confirmations & needed Republican help. The Republicans wanted to pass the bill, so they were backed into a corner. And this is a very layman's attempt at explaining it.

Thanks - What you described is obviously what happened, but I just cannot connect the dots between arguing to vote on a spending bill opens to door for voting for judicial confirmations.

If the two things are tied together, then why would the GOP agree to open that door?

The rules of the senate are too arcane for my ken. I would think that Reid could bring anything to a vote he wanted - all he needs is a majority of the DEMs to agree = isn't that right?

Here was the claim.
Senate Dems were supposedly so distraught with 2014 and Reid's leadership that they just wanted to pack up and go home.
There may have even been a soft agreement with the GOP to that effect.

McConnell encouraged all to go quietly into the night.
Cruz did not listen.

McConnell does not like Cruz. McConnell is a Paul ally. McConnell will set Cruz up when he can, and this was one perfect occasion. I would bet big money that is what happened here. It is a shot across Cruz's bow. Cruz is very bright, but McConnell is too. Difference is McConnell really knows the ropes.

When Reid announced Dems were ready to move forward with a litany of nominations, "anonymous" word went out from "GOP sources" it was Cruz's fault. Cruz's obstenence had taunted them into staying in town. For Dems, Cruz provides both convenient excuse and distraction accounting for their atrocious appointments. So they are more than happy to pile on, agreeing with the meme.

In an ideal world? An abundance of significantly more qualified candidates.

In the real world? :thanksObamameme:

Same thing is basically going on in the federal judiciary.

If we get another Dem in 2016, we are going to be in for a world of hurt. These affirmative action federal judges can do a lot more damage in the long run than almost anything else I can think of. I can't imagine the majority of them give a flying frick about the US legal tradition or anything but their commie agenda.

If we get another Democratic president in 2016, I might actually start thinking about going ex-pat.

The Dems just confirmed a 37 y/o whose medical claim to fame is that he completed an internal medicine residency in 2006. They are bragging about this? They are proud of it? It's like the frigging Twilight Zone.

and then today you post this same exact bullshite

For the record and easily found out, but most of you are lazy and willfully ill informed...

The Doc is fricking brilliant, talented, has initiative/drive and has cred...

He has an MD from Yale School of Medicine and a MBA in Health Care Management from the Yale School of Business, is the Co Founder of Doctors for America (a healtcare reform think tank of over 15000 members), was an instructor at Harvard Medicine, is the Co founder of TrialNetworks (a cloud based network devoted to helping people find pharmaceutical trials), created the Visions program for AIDS education in the US and India

but like I said

dont let easily researched facts get in the way.

This is how I first interpreted this shitshow - but I don't know the ins and outs of the senate at all - seems they just make up rules on the fly or stubbornly cling to 'tradition' - depending on what it is they really want to do.

I feel sure Reid would do what he wanted to do regardless of what Cruz, or any GOPer did, and would not be above lying to them to their face about what/why/when/how he was going to do it.

Of course, if there is some sort of 'rule' that Cruz broke, or didn't know about, then the blame is on him. I will doubt that until someone explains it better.
