I'm not going to cheerlead for people losing jobs because I feel like we have all been there where you get let go due to department cutbacks in various industries.
However, it SHOULD be a wake up call for all the people who told coal miners to learn to code. You have bosses, too. You have company owners, too.
But they will likely just blame Trump.

The management of the news paper did that prior to Bezos.

It was nothing more than a cog in the Joseph F. Goebbels Memorial Propaganda Wing of the DNC long before Bezos was involved. A complete piece of garbage whose best use was to wrinkle it up real good and wipe your arse with it.

Who the hell would wait for a newspaper to get sports information anyway ?
It's all instantaneous on the internets

They likely increased reporters in news - and those likely cover protesting.
I think protesters could be classified as an official sport. They are paid, get travel arrangements, get free gear and are even bailed out when arrested.
There is big competition who can be the nastiest, fattest, blue haired protester.

A logical place to eliminate when absolutely no one is buying your content. Ultimately though they are just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
