Again we can distinguish what the guy said and opinions about him.
What he said was laughably stupid and typical of the modern far left lib.
But he is objectively famous and has quite literally one of the most recognizable and famous songs in recorded music history.

TBH I have not heard his name in 20 years till this morning when the article came about him going after the crew of celebs in Vegas.
That being said I have never been a fan of Alt/Indie music either and I feel pretty confident that most in my age group (I am 50) forgot about him a long time ago

He is famous by any standard. He has sold millions of records, plays giant festivals all over the world, is regularly a guest not just for music on late night TV talk shows, has been in documentaries with people like Jimmy Page, etc etc etc
He has been one of the biggest names in alt rock music for 25 years.
