why not forgive home loans?

owning a home seems of far greater importance than a gender studies degree.

It won't ever actually happened. Didn't they try this already and congress rejected it for $10,000 forgiveness. What makes them think they can up it to $20,000 and get different results?

The government getting involved in the loans is what created this bubble in the first place. A serious bank or institution wouldn’t lend 300k to some shitbrain for a liberal arts degree when they know they will just end up a barista. Only the government would make those loans.

Except they do do that. But no one is taking out 300k loans or that much, but private banks like College Ave, Citizens, do not check your major I believe, and it can be switched. Never heard of any bank rejecting people for major choice.

And on top of this shite, illegals are being given food, lodging, pre-paid gift cards, and free air fare anywhere in the country, etc. Money to Ukraine in a non-stopping war and Biden says he will build the bridge in Baltimore for whatever the cost.
Where is all this money coning from? It's coming from the working men and women of this country in the form of taxes.
We pay, the politicians play!

Do you fall into one of these groups?

VOX - Biden Administration's Plan B for "Student Loan forgiveness"

quote:

Who would get student loan forgiveness under Biden’s plan?
This plan would target five kinds of borrowers, and in most cases it would not require them to fill out an application; the Education Department would use data it has on hand to implement the forgiveness once the plans are finalized.

People who now owe more money on their loans than they originally borrowed. These borrowers would have up to $20,000 of debt from interest erased, regardless of their income. They would still have to repay the original amount they owe. Individuals making less than $120,000 a year, or couples making less than $240,000, would qualify to have full forgiveness of their interest.

People who have owed on loans for at least 20 years. If a borrower entered repayment for undergraduate debt 20 years ago or more, they would qualify for full forgiveness. If a borrower of graduate school debt entered repayment 25 years ago or more, they would also qualify.

People who took out loans to enroll in “low-value” academic programs. These borrowers took out loans for institutions or programs that were deemed by the federal government to have low financial value. The White House defines this as programs or schools that “lost their eligibility to participate in the Federal student aid program” or were deemed to have cheated their students, or left graduates with loan payments on earnings after school that were not better than what someone with a high school diploma could earn.

People who would qualify for a preexisting loan forgiveness program but aren’t enrolled in one right now. This option would automatically enroll borrowers who qualify for forgiveness through the revamped income-driven or public service forgiveness programs.

People experiencing financial hardships. This option is a little vaguer, but it is meant to apply to borrowers for whom other forgiveness and repayment programs don’t apply. Hardships include medical debt, expensive child care, and those at risk of default.

Vox is even questioning how much this is actually going to work since it uses programs already established and won't do as much as they're making it appear.

A loan can not be forgiven, they can only be repaid (accounting 101). In this case they are being repaid by the American taxpayer.

The whole way, this was promoted to teachers and nurses who worked in an underprivileged area and received up to X amount back. Then, after so many years, those people applied for forgiveness only to be denied. The whole thing was a scam to get people rich. I know many who worked in these areas, sacrificing more money because it would have been worth more over time to have their loans forgiven, only to be lied to by the Department of Education about forgiveness.

They just clarified some regulatory issues.

The implementation of PSLF was a disaster initially under the Trump admin (not necessarily the fault of the Trump admin), and the regs had to be cleaned up a lot.

PSLF is not the same thing the Biden admin is trying to do. Clinton started the process and it's been expanding and ever changing since. PSLF requires a significant amount of repayment to be made, along with certain types of employment (public service related, generally lower paying).
This all out blind forgiveness is a terrible plan with no real permanent solution to a significant problem.

So, a "fitness model" friend of mine that has a half million in student loans she spent traveling all over the world is going to walk away debt free?

No, this program will likely pay the interest on the loans if she owes more than the original loan. It’s a massive nothing-burger and a sure sign of trouble within the re-election campaign for Biden.
