lets take your statement at face value. If its true that American pop culture is idiocracy personified, why are their millions of people actively trying to come here yearly?

To make bank doing jobs that lazy Americans don’t effectively do?

I guess there is no more 'will of the people' sentiment from Elon.
(DKE is referring to Dunning-Kruger Effect, so he's saying we're all idiots)

I'm pointing out his hypocrisy.

But you aren't.

You're conflating his choices/actions and a leftist view of institutional credit for success.

Again, focusing on the past and our past success is his point. We aren't in that position today and he's saying what needs to be done. We do the same song and dance with all population cohorts who fall behind (well not MAGA and Midwest white baws who made bad choices so much it turned into intergenerational poverty)

They are victims of real estate that declined. Generational wealth lost because their parents happened to grow up in Ohio and Pittsburgh instead of California or New York and instead of having homes worth $1.5 million the homes are worth $100k

It's not true. 60% of my neighbours are Indians from India who work for Intel and Nike. They are fantastic people and their kids are assimilated AF. They are superior to a typical 5th generation white American family in basically every conceivable way. No tattoos, their kids are not going to be trans or hate their parents or hate America. They won't do drugs. They will be doctors or engineers.

You literally live in an Indian enclave in the United States

I'm not doubting they're nice people and productive. But some people may not want to see their communities supplanted, are willing to live with America being less innovative as a result, and I think that's a perfectly valid stance.

None of this speaks to their choices in creating their own economic value.

Also, I'm pretty sure this is literally a Leftist argument re: black people

I think there's a happy medium. You are right in that the first Indian family built next door (was the only remaining vacant lot) and now they've brought 3 more colleagues families into our 1950's cul de sac.

But it could just have easily been Ukrainian engineers or Russian engineers. They are equally smart and hard working.

I don't have a problem with anything Vivek is saying. When we pay college kids millions to play a game, and lawn care workers make more than our teachers, our priorities are screwed up.

He lives in an Indian enclave in Portland.

Yeah, that's the sort of people we need more of.

My wife's nephew is dumb as frick. Didn't graduate high school, but he's a hard worker.

At 25, he makes over $100k in the sticks of Oklahoma doing pest control. Cheap cost of living and he is raising his family of four just fine. I believe he only pays $900 rent for the 3 bdr house.

If that guy can support his family just fine with a room temperature IQ (but willing to work his arse off) then maybe the problem isn't H1B visas, it's work ethic and discipline.

Top companies hire non Americans because of DEI policies that provide financial incentives for hiring non-whites.

I don’t believe this. Neither of my kids got interviews from said companies and they had excellent GPAs from regular schools. I have always heard the affirmative action/DEI crap but never seen any real evidence of it. I have seen a lot of evidence of good old boy network hiring which you never hear anyone whine about on this site.

Maybe this is a helpful clarification: I am referring to bringing in via legal immigration the top ~0.1% of engineering talent as being essential for America to keep winning.

This is like bringing in the Jokic’s or Wemby’s of the world to help your whole team (which is mostly Americans!) win the NBA.

Thinking of America as a pro sports team that has been winning for a long time and wants to keep winning is the right mental construct.

Where is he wrong? Well, except for pissing on Slater and Zach without dropping a Kelly pic.

But seriously, we need more tiger moms and less let me kiss your boo boo moms. This country by and large is soft as shite and that’s why certain immigrant groups are kicking our asses.

What’s better a low to mid 4 40 yard dash or a perfect SAT score?

Vivek pointing out America has gotten too fat and too happy isn’t going down in flames.

I'm sure you're right. And I don't even blame them, we all want to live around people with similar values, lifestyles, ambitions, etc.

The idea of intentionally surrounding yourself with varied lifestyles, ethnicities, etc. is a personal choice someone can make I guess, but it's not what comes naturally to most.

I think the problem is that America is too big and divided to really settle on guiding principles outside of things like wealthy, productive, jobs, etc. and all of those things push us toward open borders/societies. And in only being able to reach consensus on these items, we're importing (or allowing illegal immigration) of lots of people who may have other priorities that are even more powerful than the ones "natives" can agree upon.

This RR Reno weak god/strong god concept in action. In Europe, the weak god of globalism/political correctness/multiculturalism allowed Muslims to pour in, and they brought their strong god (religion) with them. And it is, as the name indicates, a more dominant and authoritarian idea set.

I don't think our example with tech, etc. is as stark, but there are definitely similarities. We can't agree on much, but we like jobs and we're scared of America being seen as for us-by us, so we open our borders in various ways. And if some of the people we allow in prioritize each other to the exclusion of everyone else in taking over communities, companies, sectors, etc....

It’s sad how he views America as some sports team. He only cares about enriching himself with cheap labor
