Virginia hospital system bars workers from bringing their own PPE

Inova, a medical system that operates hospitals in northern Virginia, is banning employees treating coronavirus patients from wearing their own personal protective equipment (PPE) despite shortages in the hospital.
In a statement to the Washington Post, Inova said that only “hospital-grade, quality-assured products” are approved by the system and it can not guarantee those standards from products employees bring from home.
Employees who work at Inova Fairfax Hospital said the policy isn’t enforced unilaterally and can cost them their job if they aren't compliant.

“It made me feel like I wanted to cry,” one employee told the Post. “It was either choosing between my safety or my job.”
Last week, three employees were told to either treat patients without the N95 masks they brought from home or leave. LINK

They don't want to be liable for PPE that they aren't sure of the source and handling. My wife's hospital did the same. I get it but don't like it.

...
I can understand not wanting people to use their own instead of hospital issue.
But not use their own to treat patients unprotected? frick YOU!
That sounds like an easy OSHA grievance against the operator.

Yeah this is bullshite.
Last week a California hospital suspended a group of nurses after they refused to enter rooms where patients were being treated for coronavirus without first getting N95 respiratory masks, the National Nurses Union told The Associated Press.

So either no protection,
or
No job.
Well alrighty then. I wonder how long it will be until this Hospital system claims that it is "under-staffed?"

At my hospital we are allowing non front line people to wear masks from home. Dietary, Business Office, Medical Records etc. For the front line staff, we still have enough of the good ones.

Is this supposed to be bad?
Do you want the nurses bringing their own syringes from home?

A little misleading, I am sure the hospital is providing masks. They might not be N95 but they are providing masks. This makes it sound like they are treating people with nothing.
From a liability standpoint, of course the hospital wants to control the PPE the nurses use. It can't be a free for all. You can bet your arse the same nurses complaining about PPE would be the first to sue the hospital if their own PPE failed. It will always be someone else fault.

Tenant had a nurse die last week that had no mask. The spokeswoman said “all employees are issued PPE”. The husband said she was never provided any and scared to death to go to work as ICU nurse. She got symptoms - coughing etc and died at her home one night. Husband found her on floor of living room.
I hope he sues the shite out of Tenant

Not sure how you arrive at this point, but go ahead.

It is the same thing from a liability standpoint.

So you think it is better to go without required ppe instead of wearing your own, because it MIGHT not work.
More big company red tape crap.

Nowhere in the story does it say that the nurses didn’t get PPE.
