Coming from a military family with two generations that achieved Vindmans rank was painful to see such a spectacle. Kind of makes me wonder how he was promoted.

Same way anyone else does: Right Senior Rater at the right time with the right profile.
The board has exactly 2 minutes to look at a file. They look at ORB, DA Photo and last 5 OERs. If you have at least 3 of your last 5 OERs that are "Top Block" in the Senior Rater column, you have over a 97% chance of being promoted. CSL, however, if you aren't 5/5, those chances drop to 4%.

I got a top block on my separation OER. It got out and I thought the other CPTs were going to shank me.
And I was the SIGO in a Cav Squadron.

That is a courageous senior rater you had to rate you "as is" vs. "as the profile should be".
That means your SCO thought more highly of you than the majority of his staff primaries (Commanders are senior rater by the BDE CDR). It also was a significant risk, as his profile is maintained over his career, so that's three fewer MQs he can give as a Brigade Commander.

Not sure that's true. If you wear a tab, you went to school. If you wear a scroll, you are an actual Ranger.
