I'm in the Navy, I know what I signed up for, so do most of the non-whiners.

A guy in a SOC is there because he wants to be there. To turn what Trump said into a political thing is beyond disgusting.

I'm confused. And god bless that woman. She sounds like a remarkable person.

I believe you are wrong in this regard. There is a bloodlust on the Left that will not let President Trump make even the most minor of missteps. They would not be satisfied if he was absolutely perfect. They have to find a reason to hate him. And they do. Time and time again.

ETA: Bottom line, we are in a downward spiral and neither side is going to give ground.

Trump was very gracious and personable in the call above.

Now that I understand that it was a different call that had the "He knew what he signed up for" comment;

quote:

He tried to convey the sentiment that military personnel understand the risks when they sign up for service and was trying to say it in an admirable way.

Exactly, he was trying to convey how brave it is to even sign up for military service. I was non-military, but my son is at Ft. Jackson for basic right now (LA Nat. Gaurd). I know that "he knows what he signed up for" because we had many discussions about it.

quote:

It didn't come across that way to those on the other end of the call,

I'm not convinced that they were genuinely offended. There are so many people that actively look to misinterpret anything Trump says, or at least take it out of context, in an attempt to make him look as offensive as possible. They're trolls that should be ignored, but we know they won't be....

What stood out to me in that video was how the wife was relatively upbeat she didn't sound broken I guess it's not every day you talk to the president of the United States...

But if this was the tone of all the calls, then he was a lot better than I expected him to be capable of.
I keep trying to tell people that what you think you know about people in DC from a character standpoint is almost always a caricature.(good or bad).

That really goes for anyone famous.

I'm not either. With the empty barrel there to fan the flames, it's too easy to see that it could have been a choice to be offended.

Sure, she shares some culpability. It really wasn't her place to publicly comment on the call. But I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility that she and the others in that car took the comment in a negative way.

You know as well as I do that this is 100% a Frederica Wilson driven thing.

That comment absolutely reflected a VERY common refrain among military personnel and their families.

It took an idiot to make it something else.

I'm not afraid to go here at all.

It was ABSOLUTELY a manufactured "offense".

Wilson is an awful human and, well, the spouse either let her manipulate her or isn't a terribly good person herself.

Yeah yeah. Gold star family blah blah blah.

Having your husband killed in battle sucks arse. But, it ain't a character trait. You can still be a heinous bitch whose husband was killed in battle.

I imagine it went something like this:

"Your husband was a selfless hero. He loved his family and his country. He never questioned his commands and was always ready to go - he knew what he signed up for. And he died in his duty serving this country."

Dude, have you ever listened to the waste of oxygen that is that “Congresswoman”? It is obvious she isn’t the brightest bulb on the tree and likely has huge issues with listening comprehension nor understanding context that an averagely intelligent person could easily ascertain.

I’m surprised that CNN didn’t call out the obvious Trump lie:

Missouri is NOT a good football team

Who knows. I wasn't there, so don't really know. I do know they were on their way to the airport to pick up his body, so I can only imagine how emotional the moment already was. I would guess there was also already some bias there towards Trump, but I don't know that for sure. Unfortunately people only sometimes hear what they want to hear, or emotion allows them to take an otherwise benign comment completely out of context.

My overall stance on the issue is Trump could have done a lot to quell it by calling Mrs. Johnson and clarifying his point instead of going to Twitter to call Rep. Wilson a liar. Would people still have criticized Trump? Sure, but that comes with the territory. Sometimes you just have to be the bigger man, swallow your pride and apologize.

Handle it with class like Rep Wilson did?

Why does he need to apologize for Rep Wilson, the Empty Barrel, making up lies?

And that's why we need the draft instead of a highly financially incentivized & bought volunteer military force .

So the elite war mongers can no longer just hunch their shoulders indifferently & say " they know what they signed up for" when they send someone of to die in some Godforsaken place.
