USAID packages found among Hezbollah weapons cache in Lebanon
By Isabel Vincent and Benjamin Weinthal
Published Feb. 10, 2025
USAID humanitarian packages were found amidst a cache of weapons owned by terror group Hezbollah in Lebanon, an Israel Defense Forces soldier claimed to The Post.
“From the American taxpayer to Hezbollah, with love,” said Asher Fredman, a former IDF soldier and currently executive director of the Misgav Institute for National Security and Zionist Strategy, a think tank, in Jerusalem.
Asher told The Post that he found sniper rifles, anti-tank missiles and explosives alongside the care packages marked “USAID” while on patrol in an undisclosed village in Lebanon where the Iran-backed Hezbollah had a stronghold.
...
“They had been there recently,” he said. “They fled the village as they saw the IDF on the way.”
A spokesman for the IDF told The Post they had no further information about the USAID packages.
“When I served in Lebanon last October, we found huge Hezbollah weapons caches, together with USAID care packages (not to mention UNICEF folders),” Fredman had said in an X post directed to @elonmusk last week.

At this point it’s what has USAID not funded.

Why are they just now bringing this up? You seriously think this is the first time something like this was found?

quote:Not really surprising. During the U.S. military involvement against the Taliban in Afghanistan, food aid packages provided by USAID to the Afghan civilians frequently found their way into Taliban possession feeding the same people we were trying to kill.

The Taliban would take over a village and confiscate the food.
It didn't necessarily mean USAID gave the food packages to the Taliban.

Conveniently when controversy about USAID is making a big stink politically in the U.S.
I am sure they were as legitimate as the "TNT" labels on Bugs Bunny cartoons.
I worked with USAID all the time when I was in the Middle East, primarily on pretty mundane shite like local farming practices and microfinance at the village level. Never, not a single time, did I see a package labeled "USAID".

I’m sure we’ve directly/indirectly funded Hamas and Al Queda as well

The general premise behind USAID isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it’s pretty clear that most USAID workers and especially its leadership has lost its way and their mission should be a shared function of State and Defense if no other reason than to streamline and reduce bureaucracy and overhead.

Have you read "The Ugly American"?
It's a nonfiction account of the same stuff in the 1950's, before USAID was a twinkle in JFK's eye. The US would export shiploads of supplies to influence a local impoverished population. The shipments arrived in crates prominently marked "A Gift From America." It should have been a boon for the US abroad, just as intended. After all, it was the best of plans laid by mice and men.
Now for the rest of the story.
The Soviets couldn't come close to matching US expenditures. They recognized the potential influence. So instead of matching the US effort, they simply bribed local dockworkers to slap stickers over the US labels saying "A Gift From The USSR." Recipients were predictably grateful in response .... to the USSR! The more supplies we sent, the more the locals loved the Soviet Union.
It should have been a lesson in unaccountability.
Unfortunately, USAID is unburdened by the past.

It shouldn't.
