This is 1000x more momentous than stupid Ukraine.

We need India on our side. Period.

I hope the next administration can fix this before it’s too late.

Edit: frick Biden!

India buying discounted Russian oil will put downward pressure on the market.

The imbalance won't last long.

It’s amazing how much our relationship with India has diminished since the Democrats got back in power. They f everything up!

BRICS (Russia, China, India, Brazil, S Africa)

India and China will never be "aligned" on military or foreign affairs.

Brazil and S. Africa are both closer to being failed states than be a threat to anyone in any capacity.

AND--the only thing that Russia and China are aligned on is countering US influence. There are deep historical and geographical issues between the two and they will not be aligned forever.

There is no need for the fear porn.

Helping Pakistan all these years hasn't helped. Seems like a severe miscalculation on our part to let India slip over to the dark side.

We didn’t. India buying Russian oil because its cheaper is not indicative of anything other than India doing what’s best for itself.

They have always bought weapons from the Russians and the West.

India is not aligned with China on anything, nor will they be.

Here are my $0.02. FWIW, I am in Indian who has lived in USA for last 18 years.

India trying to buy Russian oil for cheap has nothing to do with USA. Here are a few things.

1) India and China has never been allies and will never be allies. They have fought wars and continue to see border skirmishes. People who are thinking the current situations are going to bring India and China together do not know what they are talking about. Read up on the Quad LINK. If anything, recent Chinese actions have brought India and USA together.

2) Modi's party while continues to win elections, has not been very successful in economic fronts. Rupee is at an all time low against dollar. Un-employment is high. Indian economic growth rate has been on a downward trend since Modi took office in 2014. They have had to reduce interest rates for Employee Provident Fund recently to the lowest level in last 50 years.

3) Many of the suggested changes in law (CAA, Farm Bill) have resulted in unprecedented protest from common people.

4) Country is very polarized along communal lines. More so in any point that I have ever seen in my life (I am 44 years old).

5) Gas/diesel prices have been historically hight even before the Russia-Ukraine war started. Inflation has also been very high in India.

6) India was buying oil from Iran during Trump's presidency.

Given all these, Modi desperately needs to get the best financial deal he can get, and hence India is trying to maintain a level of neutrality in this crisis. So Indian's stance has a lot more to do with mitigating the internal pressure than any real or perceived strain in India-US relations.

The emerging Russia-China-India axis has to cause everyone in the west some pause. While large swaths of their populations live in squalor, they total over 3 billion. That's well over 35% of the world's population.

And all of them are fairly developed and have the 2nd, 3rd and 4th best militaries. All have nukes. Combine all 3 in a military alliance and it would be a force. I’m not sure India could get along with China though

Looks like American politicians and average people only have 5 minutes' memory.

Modern Indian has very strong relationship with Russia that begins in 1950. Russia always supported Indian no matter what. A friend in need is a friend indeed. That relationship got tested.

US thought they can seduce India into US arms with a few pieces of candy.

Indian wants to get benefits from both US and Russia. But when forced to choose side, of course it will take Russia side.

Do you have a source other than a known far-right fake news and conspiracy website or no?

1) India would be on NATO’s side or sit out altogether

2) Neither Russia or China have any ability whatsoever to project power or fight outside of their immediate territory

3) Brazil and South Africa are a joke and not even a factor in armed conflict.

What can we do? You probably shop for the cheapest gasoline. India will benefit from low crude oil prices until they won't. Somebody in the State Department should be pressuring India. It's not good if a democracy like India decides a little more authoritarianism works better in a country with over a billion people. But there is very little we can do. The world is choosing sides. Maybe a bunch of these countries have had a hard on against the US for a while. Now they can decide in the open.
