If he just put a foot across, could North Korean guards grab him? Wouldn't South Korean or American soldiers help?

So he defected or is attempting to seek asylum in North Korea?

From all accounts I have seen and the Army's statement, that is not what happened. Sounds like he made the choice to run across the line between the buildings. Presumably to avoid disciplinary actions, and he apparently had been in some degree of military detention for the past couple of months.

I want to know how he ditched his escort at the airport.

He might have wanted to play a round of golf. The only NK course is right north of the DMZ. It may be shut down because they haven't hosted the NK Open in a couple years.
There were usually a dozen or so foreigners in the event. Usually won by a British guy. One of them married his caddie (all of them were young females) and the NK let him take the lucky girl with him back to England.

I found this on Fox News after you posted it.

quote:

A plainclothes American soldier has been detained in North Korea Tuesday after crossing the Military Demarcation Line separating the country from South Korea, U.S. officials tell Fox News.

A U.S. Forces Korea spokesperson said the American service member on a joint security area orientation tour "willfully and without authorization crossed the Military Demarcation Line into the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK)."

"We believe he is currently in DPRK custody and are working with our KPA (Korean People's Army) counterparts to resolve this incident," the spokesperson added.

The soldier was identified by a senior U.S. defense official as Private 2nd Class Travis King, who was serving under U.S. Forces Korea and the U.S. Army and was due to face disciplinary action.

King was to be separated from the military for cause, and was supposed to go back to the U.S., according to the official, but he missed his flight.

A U.S. defense official also told Fox News the soldier was on a tour in a personal capacity and was wearing civilian clothes at the time of the incident.

King, according to one official that spoke to Fox News, disobeyed orders and went on a tour of the DMZ and then broke away from the tour group.

Remember Bowe Bergdahl got a hero's welcome for doing nearly the same thing.

It looks like he did it purposely, trying to trade intelligence for a life in North Korea and to avoid army discipline is going to end up a very poor choice for him

I'm just curious to what extent the North Koreans will go to grab someone, or do you have to go way over the line before no one can help you from the southern side?

I would like to know what discipline he got and if he was possibly getting dishonorably discharged, or he was already?

UPDATED

Two U.S. officials said the soldier detained was Private 2nd Class Travis King, who had just been released from a South Korean prison where he’d been held on assault charges and was facing additional military disciplinary actions in the United States.

King, who’s in his early 20s, was escorted to the airport to be returned to Fort Bliss, Texas, but instead of getting on the plane, he left and joined a tour of the Korean border village of Panmunjom, where he ran across the border, the officials said on the condition of anonymity to discuss the matter ahead of a public announcement.

At a Pentagon press conference Tuesday, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin did not name King, but confirmed that a U.S. service member was likely now in North Korean custody.

“We’re closely monitoring and investigating the situation and working to notify the soldier’s next of kin,” Austin said, noting he was foremost concerned about the troop’s wellbeing. “This will develop in the next several days and hours, and we’ll keep you posted.”

After reading the update. He was in a SK prison for assault and further military charges in Fort Bliss USA.

Wouldn't MP's have been escorting him from the SK prison to the military aircraft?

It's been a long time but those buildings would have South Korean Army guards posted just like the picture above facing north. They used to stand at the corner of the building so half their body was covered. If you try to get past them they'll make an effort but if you're fast enough you could possibly slip past them. If it were attempted inside one of those buildings the door to NK will be guarded and that guard will probably fight you and win. The guards for the US and RoK armies are hand selected for that duty.

The North Koreans will have a few guards there. They'll look into one of those buildings if a tour group is there. The first time I had gone there my squad leader wouldn't let me say "wassup" to them when one kept looking through a window. We were not supposed to interact with them at all. The NK guards just want to check out any pretty women that may be on the tour group.

Well that makes sense why he did it. If you look up some of the people who defected, some of them were facing some sort of disciplinary action.

His life is going to suck so hard. The norks are going to beat him to an inch of his life for the next few years. He would have been better off in the stockade.

Now watch Joe Biden give away the farm in order to get this knucklehead back. He already gave Russia an arms dealer in exchange for an America-hating basketball player.

At that point, he would become the rope in a Korean Tug of War contest for the ages.

I doubt it. There have been several defectors to North Korea by American soldiers for various reasons.

The norks will use him for propaganda. When I was there in the early early 2000s, NK propaganda leaflets would use photos of Americans that defected. The kid will be beaten on a daily basis until he makes a statement under duress glorifying NK as best Korea and how Kim Jong Un is so cool.

Jenkins who I mentioned earlier was one who appeared in leaflets, another was James Dresnok who stayed in Pyongyang till he died. The norks used him to play the typical evil American in movies.

According to FOX (yeah, I know), the escorts weren't allowed past the security checkpoint at the airport.
