I graduated high school in 1983. The 80’s, oh how often I think about that decade. It was awesome! My parents would say the early 60’s is when the US peaked. I have heard them say it many times.
I graduated in 81 but I tend to agree with your parents. When I watch programming from that era there is a depth of thinking that you don't see much of nowadays. We've seemed to become much more superficial as a society and prone to looking for instant, cheap gratification instead of looking at the big picture and using thought for the morrow.
I know things weren't perfect back then and they had some issues of their own but overall I believe they took our freedoms much more seriously and were more willing to work hard for a better future.
Having said that, I do agree that compared to now the 80's were pretty damn awesome

Yeah, but aside from Rock and Roll and some movies, the 70’s sucked nuts
Reagan GOAT

“Reagan flew in crack”? Gimme a goddamn break. Let’s totally ignore that NO ONE controls the CIA. Those motherfrickers have been doing what they want since Vietnam.

I think the 80’s look good because we jumped off the cliff in the 90’s. We actually probably peaked in the 50’s after WW2. I used to think we peaked in the 80’s. But the 60’s and 70’s created people like the Clintons who are going to lead the destruction of this country. We have definitely been in a downward spiral since the 90’s.

The end of the Cold War was the peak of American dominance. Once our great enemy disappeared, we became complacent.

More like 2000s, no?

Ummmmm. New wave ?? Pop rock??? 80s was the best.

The greatest generation is named that for a reason. That was the peak. Slow descent downhill ever since.

Dude that was tongue in cheek, but as far as labor goes, it began to shrivel up in ability when they hit the labor force, especially construction.

That same generation also planted the seeds for our destruction (Boomers + running the country in the 60s and 70s).

Reagan exploded the debt and flew in crack to ruin the inner cities at the same time erupting the war on drugs.
True. Not sure why conservatives let him skate on this other than we started deficit spending to 'crush the commies'.

America peaked after WW2 and before the lies that killed millions in the Vietnam War. Had we elected Goldwater, we would have been totally different country.
Very true. 1913 was the start of the decline (Federal Reserve and Federal Income Tax). We mashed the gas with FDR and LBJ. We shifted into overdrive with Bush, Obama, and Trump. I think we hit the wall soon. There's no way this is sustainable.

I think you can say that about the West as a whole. WW1 broke us, and WW2 accelerated the fall.
WW1 was our battle of Manzikert.

quote:Reagan literally quadrupled the national debt over his 2 terms in office. However, his deficit spending on Star Wars and tech overall also brought about the 90's Tech Boom and the spending was the cure for the Stagflation of the post Nam 70's.

Someone mentioned the 80's under Reagan as "tremendous freedom". I call BS! Reagan militarized the police, Reagan gave us 3 Strikes which tremendously increased incarceration rates, privatized prisons, started the intensification of the Nanny State with helmet laws, seatbelt laws, padding to ride bikes/skateboards laws, no passengers in rear of pickups, warning labels on music and video games for christ sakes. Asset Forfeiture was a Reagan thing. Prior to his admin the criminal case decided the forfeiture essentially.
It was also Reagan who shuttered the mental institutions resulting in the crazies in the streets of today since no one has had the balls to set up something new. Very similar to the Illegal Alien thing. Reagan gave Amnesty with the Congressional promise of new legislation, never happened as Congress is nutless.
Summary: Like almost all POTUS's, Reagan had his ups and downs. Focusing on either without admitting the opposite is narrow minded.
