Senators serve 6 year terms. Representatives serve 2 year terms. I believe there should be term limits - but where should we draw the line?

3 terms or 18 years for Senators?
9 terms or 18 years for Representatives?

While I definitely see the benefit of continuity in allowing "long-ish" terms to be served, people like McConnell (34 years so far) and Pelosi (32 years so far) really need to go. Those are 2 "big names", but for reference, the longest serving Senator is Patrick Leahy (VT), having served 44 years so far and the longest serving Rep is Don Young (AK), having served 46 years so far!

18 Senators out of 100 would be termed out as of today if we were to adopt 18 year limits. 63 Representatives out of 435 would be termed out today if we were to adopt 18 year limits.

Should we have term limits and what max term would you support?

Yes. 18 years total. This can be a combination of Senate/House. No 18 years in the House, then 18 years in the Senate. After 18 total years it's time to go home.

ETA: WITH NO PENSION!!!

To all the idiots who claim that you don't need term limits because you can just vote them out, look no further than the incumbency dominance in the House. I think it is like 95% of the time, the incumbent wins.

They should move to 12 years per chamber. If you term out in the House, run for the Senate. If you term out in both, enjoy your retirement.

No

I still maintain our Forefathers gave us a perfect system....just bc most voters are too stupid to think for themselves does not mean we should change the Constitution.

Forefathers did not forsee anyone wanting to stay in office that long. They did not give us a system to prevent FDR and we needed to change the constitution.

As a secondary question - HOW DO WE GET TERM LIMITS ENACTED? Would it take a President running on a platform including term limits for Congress? Or is there another way that we, the people, can get term limits "on the docket" for Congress?

Exactly. The problem is the electorate.

What we need are poll tests.

In addition, I would love to see a requirement that a legislator MUST operate, open to the public in their respective district or state, X months out of the year. Having Congress meet in D.C. made sense in the age of horse and buggies, but so much now.

Yes, unequivocally.

While we are at it, Representative terms should be extended to 6 years as well.

A termed out Congressman could actually do a lot of good.

No, I cherish freedom. I don’t want more laws especially one telling me I CANT vote for someone just because they have served X amount of years. Let me keep my freedom of choice and don’t take it out of the people’s hands.

Sure but it’s a real bitch to pass a constitutional amendment these days.
