re: Updated Thread: A Blast From the Past - SS Reform

What I would like is for people who are self employed to no longer be double taxed on SS/FICA.
I paid that damn 12.5% for way too long. Self employed should pay 6.25% like everyone else, then be allowed to defer the other 6.25% to a health savings account, since insurance for self employed is higher than group company plans.

Right, SS has a threshold, I'd be happy for a payout at that time.
I've helped fund that scheme for 40 years.
The "greatest Generation" had 55 pegged for retirement, 20-30 years of working. We work much longer today.

They were liberal voters when this passed, so they certainly helped.
So all Boomers were liberals and voted for it? The oldest Boomer would have been 19 and the youngest would have been 5 when Medicare came into existence. Boomers could not have done anything to stop Medicare.
quote:The last SS reform was a little over 30 years ago it was always going to have to be addressed in about another 30 years. As I said in another post as long as there is a United States of America and politicians want to be reelected SS will always be available.
Regardless members have been in power for about 30 years, maybe longer and they did nothing to address the problem.
Blaming any generation for the majority of this countries ills is ridiculous and lazy.

Kids blame everything on Boomers, yet early boomers and millennials are two peas from the same pod.
Almost 50% of young people think it should be a crime to misgender, thats what the future holds.

Unfortunately, that is the dirty little secret that many people fail to realize that Social Security taxes are collected by your portion 6.25% and 6.25% by your employer. It is really not a double tax. You are just paying the entire amount by being self employed that the government charges to hire workers that pay into social security.

Sheer idiocy. The DeSantis campaign is imploding before our very eyes.
Simply suggesting raising the retirement age to 70 is sufficient to sweep the Democratic candidates into office across the land in 2024. Anyway, many workers have paid generously into SS every month for 50 or more years, and are full penalized by the DeSantis offer. He's going down in flames

Well yeah.
If you are a politician operating the system we have,
is that not a smart play?

Soooooo let SS implode because no one wants to face realities? I understand the whole third rail aspect, but maybe someone should seriously level with the electorate about this.
Or
Should we stay blissfully ignorant on this matter?

If no changes are made there will be a 20-25% drop in SS benefits by 2033. What is your solution?

Yes it's smart for electability, but it shatters this perception (I'm talking more his supporters than Trump himself) of supporting Trump being a "conservative" position.
As a historic poster once said, with Communists expect Communism

I've said many times that Trump is a 1960s democrat.
But at least a 1960s democrat was still America First.

Economically, why is raising the age a bad thing?

in the 1930s the average lifespan was shorter, the designers of Social Security believed the funds would never run out because so many would die before they were eligible.

I don't plan to retire until around 70 or so but there's a lot of people due to situations beyond their control who will be forced to retire sooner. They paid their fair share. This is not welfare. They deserve it. Congress should have never been allowed to dip into that fund.
Many people continue to call Social Security an entitlement.....it's the money every working American and the match their employers paid into a fund for their retirement. A middle class couple currently in their 60's working +40 years earned 3-4-5 million dollars. When you run the numbers that means on the low end that couple and their employers remitted $400k, on the high end over $600k....with no growth factored in. Now add 4-5% growth annually over +40 years and you can see the how much money these people should have available for their retirement.

The age gets pushed back or the benefits get a substantial cut, there’s no other way this ends. Heaven forbid people work five more years to get their full social security benefits. Or if they have an actual retirement plan don’t and retire whenever they want.
