Unfortunately, mentally fragile people have been attracted to leftist ideology before this.
Obvious example is Jonestown. Jim Jones was a communist who convinced hundreds of people to self-isolate from society in a literal jungle, hunt down and murder a congressman and members of his accompanying party, and ultimately kill themselves. All for the "greater good".
Leftists believe that violence and destruction is justified, even if it harms them personally. They'd rather sacrifice themselves, loved ones, and communities before ever admitting they're wrong.
