The 23rd Ammendment was another deviation from the original intent of Washington DC. I don't think DC citizens should be allowed to have representation in federal elections or even in their own city government. The city is all federal property and belongs to all the citizens of this country. As we can see with the treatment of the J6 prisoners, the judicial system in DC does not represent the country at whole.

Congress is useless enough as it is.

It is totally unequipped to govern the district directly, and it has no incentive to do so effectively. There’s too many people there to just say “frick it”.

I agree with you on federal representation however. The federal district needs to shrink to include only the federal buildings around the mall, and the rest of DC needs to be given back to Maryland. MD will likely gain an EV that way, but so be it.

They're Americans. Why shouldn't they have a representative and two senators?

That doesn't mean Puerto Rico should btw

Just make a more streamlined district where few people actually live but includes everything important, and give the rest back to Maryland and Virginia

They should probably just be residents of Virginia or Maryland, which would solve the problem.

Puerto Rico actually makes more sense than D.C.

Because they chose to live in the federal district and not a state.

Because they're a district, not a state as designed. This territory was intended to be neutral.

Because they've decided to live in a place specifically designed to have no representation. Jesus it's why the capitol isn't in a state.

PR needs to be added or cut loose entirely. The status quo has no benefit for the United States.

D.C. is a district and not a state.
There is a MOUNTAIN of difference between the two. A state is defined as a sovereign political entity, despite the fact that most people tend to equate the term "state" with "province" and see the individual states as subservient to the federal government.

D.C. is not a state, and thus should not be extended the powers and authorities that states hold.

The problem there is that PR is realistically incapable of governing or sustaining itself without devolving even further into poverty/failed state status, for lots of different factors. Sheer and mind-numbing political incompetence/corruption being the largest one. PR’s governing elites know this, but they’re too culturally proud to ask for statehood.

The status quo insulates them from domestic criticism and allows them to blame every problem the island has on Washington.

I believe the question has been put to a vote with the Puerto Rican people at least twice to 1): become a state, 2): become an independent country, or 3): maintain status quo and remain a territory.

Every time they have selected three...although I wish they would select two.

Yep. And for pretty much all of those elections, a huge segment of the PR political spectrum boycotts the election.

I don’t know that there’s ever been a legitimate gauge of the island’s preference.

I agree with you though. (3) shouldn’t be an option anymore. Either shite or get off the pot.

DC is not all federal property. The vast majority is privately-owned businesses, residences, etc. On the other hand, while the most obvious concentration of federal property is on and around the Mall, federal agencies are scattered all around DC and surrounding MD & DC suburbs. So it’s not that simple.

Try reading the Constitution for once in your life. Maybe get an adult to read it to you.

I’m ok if they vote, but they need to ditch their rep in the HR. They can vote for President and be like Puerto Rico.

I also believe that we should abolish the DC level trial court and court of appeal.

SCOTUS judges need to come from actual states- and they should not be DC lifers.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Give the district back to Maryland. They will gain the right to vote and it changes nothing in terms of senate structure.

Because DC was founded that way and is intended to stay that way. It’s an independent district showing no favor to any state or location.

And they do have representation. Every single liberal in congress continually gripes on their behalf.
