Paxton has a much more nuanced definition.
In short, fascism is not so much a political ideology as it is a social response.
5 stages of fascism:

3) Arrival to power, when conservatives invite fascists to share power;
4) Exercise of power, where the fascist movement controls the state; and

You may be speaking to something else, but if we're talking about "white Christian nationalists" (to use a popular label) pushing back against ridiculous nonsense like a whiteness pandemic or uneducated Mexicans and Chinese - the vast majority aren't speaking from terror or a threat as you describe. I/they just don't want to pay for this shite, in all the forms it comes at a cost. For example, I'm not afraid of an illegal taking my job or business, but I don't want to pay for a) the illegal migrating/settling, and b) the unskilled American labor crowded out (both jobs and labor rates) of the labor force by the illegal.
