United States presidential line of succession

On the absurdly slim chance that Trump and Pence are ousted (about 1 in a million, probably), the next President of the United States would by Paul Ryan as Speaker of the House.
Interesting tidbits:
The first four spots (President, VP, Speaker, President pro tempore of the Senate - Orrin Hatch) are all elected in some manner to their post (the last two via state/regional election, then being a member of the party in charge and being selected by that party for their position).
Spots 5-18 are all selections to specific positions that are selected by the President. They are:
Secretary of State - Rex Tillerson
Secretary of the Treasury - Steven Mnuchin
Secretary of Defense - James Mattis
Attorney General - Jeff Sessions
Secretary of the Interior - Ryan Zinke
Secretary of Agriculture - Sonny Perdue
Secretary of Commerce - Wilbur Ross
Secretary of Labor - Alex Acosta
Secretary of Health and Human Services - Eric Hargan
Secretary of Housing and Urban Development - Ben Carson
Secretary of Transportation - Elaine Chao (not eligible as not a natural born US citizen)
Secretary of Energy - Rick Perry
Secretary of Education - Betsy DeVos
Secretary of Veterans Affairs - David Shulkin
Secretary of Homeland Security - Elaine Duke

So, Trump, Pence and Ryan get caught up in a scandal that takes down Tillerson and Mnuchin, and Orin Hatch dies before they can name a successor.....President James Mattis

why exactly is the Speaker of the House so high up in the line of succession?

I thought Homeland Security got bumped up behind the Secretary of Defense or the Attorney General?

I think it's because the house is a better representation of the electorate.

Will never be speaker again.
Even if the democrats landslide in 2018 she would not get in the top 5 of votes for speaker

As it stands impeachment is still unlikely because it would require a majority in the House of Representatives to go to trial and a two-thirds majority in the Senate to make it happen. Both the House and the Senate are currently under Republican control, meaning that Trump's party would have to abandon him for him to be kicked out of office. However, the bookmakers aren't ruling out impeachment with the latest odds from Coral showing that there is a 40 per cent chance Trump will fail to make it to the end of his first term in office. Their latest odds are as follows: Impeachment or resignation before 2020: 6/4 (40 per cent chance) To serve full first term: 4/6 (60 per cent chance)

I swear for a moment I thought that was a picture of DeVos, and wondered how far down you felt this thing was going to go

There has been discussion about this in the past, but the order of Cabinet posts in the line of succession is determined by the date that the departments were created. That's why Homeland Security is still last.

If dems were to landslide in 2018 and impeach Trump it would mark the end of the Union.
Even if Joe six pack doesn't rise up and kill off half of congress then the Tit for Tat politics will have escalated to a point of no return
