they had to, no one wanted the job

quote:

At United, bids for 978 captain vacancies, or about 50% of the vacancies posted, have gone unfilled in the past year, United pilot union data shows. In June, 96 of 198 openings went unfilled.

quote:

Multiple pilots at United told Reuters that senior first officers have been avoiding promotions as they do not want to surrender seniority in their current job category to become a junior captain and risk more disruption to their personal lives.

Under current work rules, pilots said they can be forced to involuntarily accept assignments on days off and that trips can be changed or extended "on a whim."

Seniority affords pilots some schedule certainty as it lets them choose and trade trips, and plan vacations. But a change in their job category or airline base or the equipment they fly can affect their seniority.

A captain's pay is better, but junior pilots, currently, face greater risks of being subjected to unpredictable flying schedules, more on-call duty and assignments on short notice.

Taking a captain's job would have boosted Anderson's pay by 40%, but the 48-year-old pilot said it would have been costly.

How about go get your ratings, build your 1500 hours of flight time and go make that money.

Problem is the pilot unions lobbied for the minimum to increase from 500 to 1500 hours on the recent fear from the crash in Buffalo caused by horrific pilot error in the 2009.

Problem is those pilots had over 1500 hours at the time of the crash and the rest of the Western world I believe still only requires 500 hours, and if you haven't noticed everything is ok.

So I guess a cynic would conclude the pilot unions lobbied for the three fold increase in hours/debt off that tragedy to create a pilot shortage so that labor negotiations would be in their favor.

I guess, don't hate the player, hate the game but these demands aren't going to stop anytime soon and your ticket price and chances of your flight being delayed or cancelled from staff shortages are just going to keep going up.

I believe you're stretching the truth there a tad. I'm thinking the union doesn't want anyone to lose their job over failing a drug/alcohol test. You really expect us to believe that union is saying it's okay if their pilots are under the influence while in the captain's seat? I don't

ALPA has very much fought to keep them employed as a pilot. A few years ago a Delta pilot checked into work to operate an MSP-SAN flight and he was multiple times the legal limit. He had also been caught on video trying to dispose of a vodka bottle before going through security. ALPA fought for him to stay employed as a pilot. Are you really ok with that?

Bingo.

Any man worth his salt should have no issue negotiating his own contract. Only lazy fricks, screw ups, and socialists want labor unions.

United has over 13,000 pilots. You seriously think everyone can negotiate their own salary.

Proud ALPA member.

I love hearing this. I've got news for you, prices are going up no matter what. No raise, 10% raise, you will pay more regardless.

Good to see you have no problem with a portion of your paycheck being used as an ongoing fundraiser for the Democrat party. Good to know you don't believe in personal accountability either. Show up to work intoxicated and attempt to enter the flight deck, no problem if you get caught, the union will fight to keep you employed. You can't even drive for Uber with a DUI but ALPA thinks that shouldn't disqualify you from taking the controls of a passenger jet. What a stand up group!

So this is your metric for judging Unions?

Nope. I judge them on their behavior. Union members tend to be ignorant and violent. You need look no further than the Eastern Airlines pilot strike. Those pilots destroyed property and physically assaulted anyone who crossed their picket line. They also threatened several posf-strike hired female pilots with rape and went to their homes.

This is an embarrassing thread. Union did its job very well. You're freaking lying if you wouldn't be rejoicing a 40% raise on your paycheck. Lots of jealousy going on.

Pilots are a very skilled profession so I’m cool with them being unionized. We all know the airlines are just extensions of FedGov anyway.

Canada has an economy smaller than Texas despite having 10 million more people. Its not nearly as prosperous as a country as Americans make it out to be.

Canadian households are the most indebted in the G7 by a large margin. Mainly because their salaries are lower, tax burdens higher, and cost of living astronomical.

So you're fine with an athlete making $40 million a year, but are outraged that the guy at the controls when you're 30,000 feet in the air just got a nice raise ?

Makes sense.

Yeah. It's normal for people to negotiate their salary during the hiring process and then check in with their superiors over time whenever they feel like they're worth a raise.

Companies larger than United have no issue doing this.

All of these are great reasons to distrust and hate unions. Getting their members a 40% pay increase is not

My response was directed at the jackleg that commented that airline transport aircraft are automated and pilots don’t do anything and don’t deserve that raise.

Skywest and Ryanair have good safety records but they both combined don’t produce nowhere near the revenue that United does.
