Unemployment filings fall and layoffs remained at historical lows.

The number of Americans applying for jobless aid fell modestly last week as layoffs remained in the same historically low range of recent years.
U.S. applications for unemployment benefits in the week ending June 13 dropped by 4,000 to 226,000, the Labor Department reported Thursday. That’s in line with the 225,000 new applications forecast by analysts surveyed by the data firm FactSet.
Weekly filings for unemployment benefits are considered representative of U.S. layoffs and are close to a real-time indicator of the health of the job market.
Despite concerns that the conflict in the Middle East would further squeeze a flagging labor market, hiring has picked up in recent months following a miserable 2025 that saw fewer than 200,000 job gains. For comparison, about 1.5 million jobs were added in 2024.
U.S. employers delivered a surprising 172,000 new jobs in May and the economy is averaging 188,000 job gains in the three months since the Iran war began in late February. That’s the best three months of hiring since early 2024. The unemployment rate remains historically low at 4.3%.
So this is why the news media has been harping on the reflecting pool so much. They do not want to cover positive news in America.

I'm still confused when we are supposed to believe data like this from the government and when we don't. This board picks and chooses when to believe the numbers.

When in doubt ask me. Once my coffee kicks in I am an internet expert on all things at all time.

Every time a news story exists at the same time as another news story, someone here concludes there’s a conspiracy to suppress the second one.The unemployment numbers were reported by the AP, Reuters, CNBC, Bloomberg, the Wall Street Journal, and countless local outlets.
The media didn’t “refuse to cover” it. You literally found the story in the news and posted it. The fact that a story exists is usually a clue that it was, in fact, covered.

With no coffee, are you an expert on some things sometimes or retarded on things all the time?
When does your coffee kick in? How much coffee does it take to become an expert? How long does this expert coffee last?
I need you to produce an expert coffee resume for review before I contract out your internet services

No, you aren't confused. You don't want to believe it because it's Trump. But you believed Biden's numbers that were ALWAYS re-adjusted a month later to show things weren't really as rosie as they initially claimed... And you did this after his administration and collaborators claimed we weren't in a recession, even when it was blatant to anyone who didn't have TDS and/or a bias toward Democrats that we were in a recession for quite some time.
So, frick off back to Reddit or DU, nerd.

Look as in conservative as anyone in here but this number is total bullshite
This doesn’t take into account people that were searching for a long time and have since given up
The job market is horrid as someone it took almost 2 years to find a job. Wouldn’t wish this on anyone

It's not how much. It's if you can tell Robusto from Arabica in your espresso.

I thought it was adjusted again to be 1.1 million?
What I do know is that actual Americans were negative gains in jobs over Biden’s last year and possibly his whole term (I forget and I’d have to look it up) and foreigners had positive gains in jobs.
Disgusting

Well, yes. The Unemployment # has always been a foolish metric. It counts the number of people looking for jobs that cannot find a job. If one is not looking, then one is not unemployed.
I believe a better # is the employment participation rate:
quote:
U.S. labor force participation rate stands at 61.8%. This key economic indicator measures the percentage of the civilian noninstitutional population (ages 16 and older) who are either employed or actively looking for work.
The overall % of 61.8 is historically low which would be bad (and I've seen it reported as bad). However, the key demographic:
quote:is at, IIRC, a historic high.
Prime Age: For workers ages 25 to 54, the rate is much higher, typically hovering around 83.9%
FWIW.

Sweep,
You bring up a good point I never see addressed. We know illegals were issued SS# rather than ITINs, so they would be captured in BLS data regarding jobs info.
Millions have now left, so they would show up in the jobs numbers....yet we are seeing 150K plus job gains each month. That would mean Americans are replacing the illegals AND STILL we are adding 150K jobs.
The proof, other than this dustup the last couple of months, wage growth has been outpacing inflation every month. That does not happen in a soft job market.
Same with housing, which never accounts for illegals. 30 million entered and the housing market pricing exploded. They are going home and prices in 89 markets are declining.
Course to admit this would be admitting illegals were a drain on US citizens.
