Surprised a thread not started yet, so I will.

Reuters on Sweden/Finland joining NATO

Huge development. Will Putin throw a tantrum or just stfu and pretend it’s no big deal to save face?

If a tantrum, what? Shut off natural gas to the EU? Bomb the frick out of Ukraine and get it over with even if it means WW2 brutality?

Both. His foreign minister will throw a tantrum on paper, Russia will initiate some cyber attacks in Helsinki and Stockholm, then everyone will go back to normal.

Sweden and Finland were already de facto NATO members anyway. They'll be formally in by the end of the year.

Just keep poking the Bear.

Insanity.

Vladimir Putin issues three warning shots to Sweden - one of them is nuclear war

shite just got a lot more serious.

Sovereign nations joining mutual defense alliances is categorically not "poking" anyone. If Russia didn't want "neutral" Europe to coalesce around NATO, it shouldn't have made them feel threatened by cynically gobbling up territory belonging to other nations.

No it didn't. Sweden and Finland have been de facto members of NATO for 20 years.

Having NATO tanks on the Russia-Finland border is not a good thing.

Two peaceful countries, one of who was invaded by Russia just in the past century, want to join NATO. And that's poking the bear? If they want to join, let them join and start paying in their two percent (because of the current crisis they have agreed to double pay for a decade meaning billions of dollars will come in to NATO).

This is a great day!

Why? There are NATO forces in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland that are already "on the border." Russia has had troops on Finland's borders for 200 years.

I was referring to Turkey bending the knee and allowing it as a voting member.

How do you think the USA would react if Mexico signed a Treaty with Russia or China? Or Canada did this?

FYI Russia just flew fighter jets into Swedish airspace as recently as June 9th.

Joining a group designed for mutual defense against attack from the bear is "poking" the bear?

Didn't Russia want to join NATO during the Bush years? But were denied.

What about it? Turkey was never seriously going to veto their admission. They simply wanted Saab to stop arming the Kurds, and for Finland/Sweden to turn over some suspected terrorists first. It was never a legitimate hurdle.

Let's explore why you think that is relevant. Regardless, my answer is that we would have zero right to object to the foreign policy decisions of other sovereign nations to the extent it does not infringe upon the United States or our allies.

Oh, so the same cat and mouse game that NATO and Russia/USSR have been playing for 80 years? Yawn.

I'd say yes since Putin warned he would possibly use nuclear weapons if this happens.

Might make sense to try and have peace talks with Russia instead of the tactics the west has been using. Only bad shite can happen if we keep "poking the bear" that has more nuclear weapons than anyone else on earth.

Yes. We told them to frick off in the late 90's/early 2000's in what may end up being one of the most illustrious examples of "cutting off your nose to spite your face" in world history.

Good Lord.

NATO members do not “pay in“ 2% of their GDP to some NATO account somewhere. They simply undertake to spend that percentage of their GDP on their own military.
