You should turn this thread into what "accomplishments" Lewis has made as a representative of his district.
Crime rates, unemployment rates, etc...
Crime rates in his district are much lower now than they were in the 70's....and his district's unemployment rate is slightly over 6% so about where the state is at 5.9%.
John L Lewis represents one of the most dynamic congressional districts in the US and one of the most diverse....the Georgia 5th is in excellent shape...it is about as distant from falling apart as any district in any state anywhere represented by anyone....

I was reviewing John Lewis' background on that bastion of all that is known in the world, Wikipedia, and found this interesting. Perhaps John Lewis and Trump should break bread together as apparently they share some of the same views:
quote:
Lewis opposed the U.S. waging of the 1991 Gulf War,[28] NAFTA,[29] and the 2000 trade agreement with China that passed the House.[30] Lewis opposed the Clinton administration on NAFTA and welfare reform.[26] After welfare reform passed, Lewis was described as outraged; he said, "Where is the sense of decency? What does it profit a great nation to conquer the world, only to lose its soul?

Commendable, but show me where he directly had anything to do with that.

So right there in the linked AJC article that started this thread...
quote:
The district has an 8.2 percent unemployment rate – above a national jobless rate that hovers below 5 percent – and the median household income for residents is about $48,000.
Liar or can't read?

Yeah, you caught me, I went too far with the copy/paste. The whole thing was tongue-n-cheek, but still ironic (not the welfare part).

In my lifetime, no one has ever fought back at these blithering idiots when they spew their nonsense. It's far past time to fight back at these morons and hold their feet to the fire with their rhetoric.
To accomplish what? What's the goal of getting down in the mud with these people? Presidents get criticism. A ton of it. The nature of politics guarantees that close to half the population are gonna be against everything you do.

And the only reason it's that high is due to the northern and eastern portions of the district being Buckhead, Midtown, Virginia-Highland, and Druid Hills, plus a ton of other neighborhoods in the district that are rapidly gentrifying.

This is in large part due to reverse white flight and gentrification in transitional neighborhoods.
Someone just sold a tiny 2-2 (with a third pseudo "bedroom" crammed in) for $400,000 next door to one of our houses, and it was the HOOD when we bought there.
There's a house under contract for $1.4mill just around the corner from our other Atlanta place that used to be a little run-down Eisenhower-era ranch.
This is all in Lewis's district.
So are MANY other gentrified in-town hoods, from College Park to Westside. It also includes already expensive midtown (crazy expensive in-fill condos), Morningside, Ansley, VaHi, Druid Hills (my hood) and part of Buckhead.
The positive performance of this district has nothing to do with Lewis and everything to do with a large affluent tax base.

John Lewis the civil rights activist vs John Lewis the political hack are not in the least comparative. Sorry

It's simply not the way a President should act.
Obama did a lot things that I thought were inappropriate for a president. However, neither you nor I are the arbiters of presidential behavior.
Virtually all president's behave in ways that are inappropriate. From flings with Marilyn Monroe to blowjobs in the Oval Office, to hanging out with rappers and "dirt of your shoulders" pantomimes.
It's a new day. Get used to it.

Nailed it. He only benefits from it by being the incumbent and a "name" that scares of other potential contenders even in the Dem primary.

This is Trump's problem. He is president now. I'm all for taking on John Lewis, disagreeing with him, and pushing back against him. While I respect who he is and what he did in the past immensely, that does not make him immune to criticism for the rest of his life. So, sure, disagree and push back. Hard.
However, recognize that you are dealing with an American icon when you do it. Show some respect. I can't think of much that I agree with Lewis on over the past 20 years, but Trump's response makes him sympathetic.
Hey, maybe just maybe Twitter is not the best medium for this? Maybe show some respect? At some point, Trump should stop pandering to his base and lead.
He is the legitimate president. It doesn't matter what John Lewis or anyone else says. Ignore it and move on. Geez.
