FEMA Grants

Corrupt as hell.

I guess now all of those corrupt New Orleans politicians won't be able to line their pockets.

One of the problems with BRIC is that states with smaller populations and more rural counties/communities struggle to get funding. The lion's share of the grant money over the four years of BRIC's existence has gone to states/counties/cities on the East and West coast. The process of obtaining a grant is complicated, and it is difficult for rural areas and smaller states to obtain funding. That is backed up in numbers and stats, and is the main reason for the language change from the Biden administration. Of course, we can't have that type of language anywhere, so we must throw this baby out with the bathwater instead of trying to make it work for the communities/people who need it most.

With the way this administration has been rescinding money, I doubt they care about the proper way of doing things.

We will see, it sure doesn't sound like they intend to.

paid to elevate homes

Why is it my job to pay for folks on the gulf to put their house on stilts? They know the risks they take, they can pay for it out of pocket.

Sounds like a State issue to me

Nothing to mitigate when you place responsibility on the people taking the risk and refuse to put it on the back of the American tax payer.

I mean look, this is my state we are talking about, so I care, but apparently it was determined that 1/3 of the funds weren't used for what they were supposed to be used for? Am I making a wrong assumption here? If that's the case we SHOULD have to pay that money back and there is no one to blame but our own apoplectic, as you put it, politicians.

You would think people there would realize that their home will get damaged by flood or hurricane in their lifetime.

Yet they build back and trust that the government will bail them out again.

FEMA has stopped accepting applications for 2024 and is canceling projects on the drawing boards from 2020 to 2023.

So they're clawing back unused funds, as is common.

ETA: Notice how the article makes no mention of how these funds were going to be used? That's why this is happening.

quote:

“Recent FEMA investments in Louisiana, like the BRIC program, have helped us better prepare for future disasters,” Carter said. “Communities in Louisiana have received millions to raise homes, design and implement smarter and greener stormwater drainage systems, and install solar on critical municipal facilities to act as ‘resilience hubs’ during potential power outages.”

These funds weren't used. They aren't helping anyone do anything.
