We seem finally to have reached the dénouement in the long, extremely one-sided, and comparatively bloodless war the United States and Israel have conducted with Iran. In one month of strategic bombing and missile attacks, the United States and Israel launched 20,000 strikes killing only an alleged 3,500 Iranians but destroying up to 90 per cent of that country’s missile and drone firing capacity and completely destroying its air defences, its navy (apart from a few coastal whalers) and almost all munitions stocks and authentic military targets. Israel suffered approximately 30 civilian deaths from counterattacks, and the United States eight combat fatalities plus five more in a non-combat accident.

There has never in the history of serious combatants been such a one-sided exchange of fire for a whole month. Because of the fragmentation of Iranian leadership, including the death of almost all of the senior cadres of the original Iranian government, the American leadership was persuaded that Iran was prepared to concede the principal US requirements: A complete and permanent end to any Iranian pursuit of a deliverable nuclear warhead, the end of Iranian military assistance to terrorist organisations and of any Iranian claim of a right to block or interfere with international commercial traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
...

Trump has just successfully purged his party of malcontents in the Senate and House of Representatives and not more than four or five presidents in the country’s history have been as preeminent as he is in the politics of the country at this stage in his administration. He has a blank cheque to return to combat and pummel Iran into submission, or to receive Iran’s submission without a return to war. He will not make a bad peace and is in a position to extract a satisfactory one. The time has come.

That's irrelevant. The correct question is, what does Bibi want?

You can’t negotiate with people who refuse to deal in good faith.

He needs to cut the bullshite and stop namby-pambying around with these fricks. I’ve tried to be supportive, but this is growing tiresome. We’re in this thing now, time to finish it.

I don’t get it - if this was the truth then why are we bothering to negotiate. Is it Trump the merciful because I find that hard to believe. All I hear is bragging about how we are beating them down but we are the ones stuck with the high prices because of this war that no one really seems to understand why we are in it in the first place.

Obviously, he hasn't. And unless Iran suddenly blinks or he decides to send in forces to take ground, Trump isn't getting shite. He'll kill a lot of civilians and take out assets, but that obviously hasn't removed Iran's offensive capabilities to date. This guy has been going back and forth on us having a deal and threats like a drunkard. He fricked up, he knows he fricked up and he's trying to find a way to save face. That's all.

We've had three done deals announced in the last two months, as well as threats to end an entire civilization and seize Kharg. WTF.

Trump doesn't want to pull the trigger and get this over with. You can't negotiate with Terrorists when their entire ethos is martyrdom. Nothing taken is nothing gained.

I know you didn't write those words. This author (Conrad Black) must be living under a rock somewhere.

Conrad Black of the Brussels Signal.eu isn't an employee of... the Brussels Signal. It's a 100% opinion/AI write.

Trump is used to having given himself 5 outs that he can claim victory on. I don't think he's been in that position a single time here, at least since the very early days. I think he waited for the Iranian people to react so we could wash our hands and say "we're giving it over to you" - and when that never developed, he's been listless since and between the Strait and the timing, it has been impossible to extricate ourselves

I think he was sold a bill of goods by Israel about what it would take to make that sort of effective uprising possible, hence the strain in the relationship since.

Apparently not

Why are you so upset about getting rid of their nukes?

Your transition is almost complete

The threat of them building 11 nukes. That threat was a big enough problem to get us into the war but apparently not important enough to get the uranium that makes things go boom. There was also regime change and thereby freeing the Iranian people but that’s also been forgotten about.
