I guess it's taken this to make him truly realize that dealing with the Iranian leadership ego is like dealing with a petulant child you keep trying to reason with instead of realizing you should have spanked them then sent them to their room well before this latest outburst.

Here's the deal with Iran: the most basic requirement for being in leadership is a radical devotion to their brand of Shia Islam, treating whoever is the Ayotollah almost as if he's Muhammed reincarnated. You can't dishearten that zealotry via military defeats, you only embolden them into trying different tactics.

This means nothing is really going to change in regards to Iran until/unless there is regime change. Regime change in this instance would mean something along the lines of taking out:

-the Supreme Leader (Ayotollah Ali Khamenei)

-Assembly of Experts
---88 Islamic scholars (faqihs) elected by the "public" every 8 years, responsible for selecting, supervising, and potentially dismissing the Supreme Leader (which is really just smoke and mirrors as candidates are vetted by the Guardian Council, whose members are appointed by the Supreme Leader).

-the Guardian Council
---6 clerics appointed by the Supreme Leader, 6 jurists nominated by the judiciary head and approved by the Majlis. The Majilis is the shorthand name for the Islamic Consultative Assembly, which is Iran's legislative branch of government.

-the Expediency Discernment Council
---20-40 members appointed by the Supreme Leader for 5-year terms to mediate disputes between the Majlis and Guardian Council. They also advise the Supreme Leader on policy.

That's the many heads of the snake running the Iranian government. Unless much (or possibly all) of that group is taken out, the best anyone is going to get are continuing series of temporary reprieves in terrorism.
