What a great thing to do.
Before my time, but there was a President who did this sort of thing, Harry Truman. In a different time, Truman would go for walks and people going to work early in D.C. would see and speak to him.
I also have a photo from WWI of my Mother (less than 3yo) bending over to feed a squirrel in a park in D.C. with the White House in the background and the fence around the White House grounds was the height and look of a standard wrought iron fence you'd see around any house of that decade.
Presidential security needs have changed a lot (understatement).
