I've been buying meat for years from a small ranch in Rockwall county Texas.

From what I’ve read, the major takeaway here is that it allows the crossing or state lines with “no roll” beef, which is ungraded. In order to be graded, beef must be processed and graded in a USDA certified facility. It’s a good thing but isn’t really going to move the needle. We’re talking about an industry that is artificially manipulating the market by reducing the kill by 25-50% weekly. The imported grounds will make a difference in the ground market and this may allow some minor relief with some cuts, but when you’re talking about things like hangers, brisket, and tenderloins; that kill number does not allow for any relief.

ETA- CAFO’s are huge drivers in this but ranchers are culpable in this, too. They’re content with eliminating overhead, raising less cattle to send to the CAFO’s, and making the same amount of money.

I can’t imagine anyone overruling this as it’s not really doing much. Where I struggle with what to do here is that as a small government conservative, how do you address and fix the problem? Maybe this will help some, but unless you have ranchers that are willing to raise more cattle and go the no roll route for the good of the country, they’re just going to keep making their money raising smaller herds and from a business standpoint, I can’t really blame them. Our food system is messed up.

ETA- I don’t want the government stepping in to private industry and telling them what they have to do. Maybe re-evaluating antitrust laws and burning the whole thing down? Idk.

Id punish them for gouging. They want to play that game Id import enough to get the prices down and let them know there has to be a balance.
