Trump is telling us that the US is running the show in Venezuela now. Does the boss not get to grant whatever leases he wants to grant? THAT would be a way to induce big American oil companies to embrace the risk of operating in a relatively-unstable Venezuela.
And THAT is why sane people are discussing the question of whether US oil companies are going to be willing to enter Venezuela at current market prices ... absent significant monetary incentives provided by the US government.

He probably also believes that “we” owned that oil, rather than oil companies simply having contracted for the right to remove it. I seriously doubt that he really understands the difference.

The US Oil companies want the US to hire private military contractors to protect them in order for them to reinvest their capital into Venezuela. I don't think that is too much to ask tbh given how strategically important Guyana and Venezuela are to our national security.
