They already are..... I bought a 2014 Sierra and its fricking me every chance it gets. Its a damn shame when you spend that kind of coin on a product that they do not stand behind.

Shame on me for buying Government Motors in the first place.... It will be my last!

The way I see this is that Trump should be kissing Mary Barra's arse right now for not announcing these job cuts BEFORE the midterms, because I'm sure she must have known about them.

Or this is some retaliation for the mid term results that did not come to fruition as some thought they would. The start of the next big dig on Trump's agenda.

Do you think it will cost more to build a vehicle in the U.S. than to have it built in China and imported to the US?

Depends on a lot of factors. Trucks will cost more to build overseas. You can thank a 25% import tariff (chicken tax) for that.

With cars, it gets more complicated. In general, it's cheapest to build in Mexico because of low wages and NAFTA. Chinese-made cars would be subject to at least a 2.5% tariff plus the cost of transporting across the ocean. US plants often have a lot of tax incentives and subsidies too, which tilts things back in their favor as well. Also remember that Chinese cars would be low-margin, high-volume.

We import mostly luxury cars from the EU, which can overcome some of the added costs because they are higher margin.

Thankful I don’t drive a gm product. After the first bailout I was embarrassed enough to permanently switch.

Free trade was Reagan and Bush Sr’s idea .....Clinton sold it also to appease the right and appear moderate. As did Bush Jr and Obama. This is about 30 years of “frick American worker “ policy perpetrated by moderates and conservatives alike. Labor and the left have been all in on Trump trade policies since the 1980s. Until Bill Clinton took the party to the right to attract moderate Republicans Trump trade policy was Democrat Trade Policy.....and the GOP said it was bad policy.....wouldn’t work.... was too intrusive...... now the GOP can’t decide between Reagan and Mondale.....y’all are some STRANGE ducks.....

Whether or not GM should or should not have its subsidies cut, does it bother anyone that Trump thinks he can just unilaterally decide that it shall be done?

Authoritarian populism.

Why do you keep ignoring the fact that companies like GM got huge tax benefits and export duty reductions because of Trump's policies? Ford's CEO said that, at worst, a trade war with China could erode "2/3 of the tax cut benefits". So they are still up billions even before you take into account the improved export duties that were negotiated under Trump (EU trade deal as an example). Ford's Q3 earnings beat expectations and stocks soared. Cat's Q3 was up 18%. Deere's Q3 was up over 30% and neither Deere nor Caterpillar have had mass layoffs since the tariffs were announced. Ford's layoffs in 2018 were part of a preexisting reorg plan.

GM is sucking because its poorly managed, and has been for some time.

Congress needs to give him a swift kick in the arse, this whole GM thing has been completely reckless.

If we actually dump the electric car tax credit, GM is boned. A Volt sells for under $40k. You need that credit to make it viable. Tesla sells cars for twice that. Rich people DGAF. The model 3 is cheaper but most of them are still quite a bit more than a volt. Tesla actually wants that subsidy to end. They get plenty of incentives from local/state level

Well Tex that's exactly what Obama did when he bypassed bankruptcy law and let "New" GM transfer all of the $45 Billion loss of "Old" GM to the new company. This was in violation of existing law. Din't bother that socialist at all. Plus he gave GM another $50 Billion. Phone and a pen.

It's almost like GM was Iran for God's sake!
