This is great! I went to Afghanistan from 03-04 for OEF as a specialist and made a grand total of around $20,000 in a year. That was tax free and included hazard pay. It’s a shame how poorly our military is paid for the job they do

Bruh that was 15 years ago. 30-40% inflation puts that to 27k. Not having to pay for a roof over your head ~1k/month. 39k. Not paying taxes on that pay is another 6k for a realistic compensation of 45k.

Single E4 in clarksville TN makes $2500/month + $1800/month for housing. Not bad considering most of them would be stocking shelves if they weren't in the army.

Plus the 60k in GI Bill benefits

What's up with all these facts? The point of his post was for you to thank him for his service.

If it was a 12 month tour you got fricked.

E4 base pay in 2003 was 21k without counting hazard pay, tax savings, housing, etc

Or he's lying.

E4 pay in 2003 was $1575 a month if I remember right...add on hostile fire / imminent danger pay and BAH / FSA if you're dumb enough to be married as a specialist and only way it's $20k is if you got busted down.

However 20k or 30k it was all getting blown within three months of redeploying so didn't matter.

I was an E4 in that same time frame and deployed to OIF. I didn't get rich but I cleared well over 20k between base, hazard, tax-free, and sep rats. I didn't get rich or anything but $20k was closer to my garrison pay.

It was pretty shite, though, either way.

It's the internet. We all scored 99.

I do have that 129 GT score though.

It's not all that uncommon in my MOS. 95+ is a regular occurrence.

Not everyone. Obviously this dude didn't.

The ASVAB is easy, like most standardized testing in the military.

I'm all for paying the military guys more.

But we should not have had a tax cut, because now we have a bigger deficit.

32 as a minimum score makes me sad. Filtering out people who think they're going from being borderline illiterate felons to getting paid $100k to work in the S-4 wouldn't be difficult. Make the minimum ASVAB an 85.

Boom. Problem solved. Home for dinner.

What's next?

Your logic is flawed. "A roof over your head" yeah if you mean a tent roof in the scorching desert your correct. His point was a low ranking (and even the mid to higher enlisted ranks) do not get compensated for what they (we) do.

I spent 22 years in the AF (recently retired as a E8) and I did things while in that would have paid me much more on the outside...like being an assistant superintendent for a squadron of 650 people.

I'm all for 10%....its more than fair, especially since our pay raises have not been much over the last 10 years.

How we would we pay for your food stamps each year willie boy? You'd go hungry with no skills or talent to fall back on.
