I think this is the most plausible explanation, but I'm sure we'll find out more.
Also, apparently the WH was the source for the WaPO reporting that he was fired on Friday. So yeah that directly contradicts with what Tillerson is saying.
Stop for a second and ask why on Friday Tillerson was asked to cut his trip short and come back to DC.
This alone makes it obvious that the decision to fire him was made before Tillerson made his statement about Russia possibly being involved in the UK attack.
Otherwise, why the frick would he have been asked to cut his Africa trip short?
