I actually think we should “meddle” in the Middle East to some extent, because we’re not just an empire, we’re a global hegemon, and I happen to like the quality of life that position has helped give you and me.

A lot of what people dismiss as us “playing global police” is really just America doing unpleasant, expensive shite to protect its position at the top. Sometimes that means getting involved in places we’d rather not be involved in. That’s just what it takes to maintain a hegemony, as distasteful as that surely sounds to the 'muh globalism' retards.

And “abandon” the Middle East? We didn’t stumble into those positions last Tuesday. Americans have been dying for that leverage for decades. We paid for those footholds in literal American blood. You can argue that some of those wars were stupid, and I’d agree with you on plenty of them, but pretending those positions have no value and we can just pack up, blow the shite up, and walk away is comically stupid.

We’re a hegemony, bro. Your nice little non-interventionist life is downstream of that whether you like it or not. At a practical level, your worldview isn’t any different from a 1960s hippie protesting every thing that made his comfortable American life possible in the first place.

If you make even 75k, or more, especially if you like to project some kind of moneyed lifestyle, your professed worldview doesn't square with the life you’re actually living. Your standard of living, even diminished from what Americans enjoyed 10, 20, or 50 years ago, is still far above the current and historical norms because you live in the dominant country in the global system.

None of that means I support every intervention just because America is doing it. It isn’t carte blanche to meddle anywhere, anytime. I can think Trump’s Iran venture is stupid while also believing that maintaining American dominance in strategically important regions is generally worthwhile.

That’s something people on this board seem to have a bizarre amount of trouble understanding: more than one thing can be true at the same time. “American intervention is sometimes necessary” does not mean “every America n intervention is smart.”

“Biden sucked then” does not disprove “Trump sucks now.” The inability of so many people here to grasp that simple concept is a perfect example of the uncritical thinking I’m talking about.

When I read this stuff about abandoning the Middle East entirely, I find it laughable. You’re both reaping the benefits of the system while begging that we throw away the very tools used to maintain it.
