I hated dignitary visits during the holidays, it meant I didn’t get to spend my holiday the way I wanted, but rather participating in a dog and pony show for propaganda purposes.

Your OP is ignorant. If you research President GW Bush he insisted on visiting the troops during the holidays and AF1 went in dark. The risk to many was not worth a photo op.
Bottom line: In today's technology you can go video conferences with troops around the world which is what Trump did.
Trump could cure cancer and you would criticize and make cancer the good guy and Trump the bad.
