Nixon signed the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970.

Nixon did a lot of horrible things to the economy, which helped Japan.

So did Reagan, with his quotas, Japan just added value to vehicles and rolled out Acura, Infinity and Lexus.

I’m conflicted on automation. On one hand it leads to efficiency and better consumer prices but on the other hand cheaper goods don’t matter much if so many industries automate where a large percentage of people don’t have jobs.

We sure can’t keep importing foreigners if we are going to automate. More people and less jobs is a disaster

The point seems to be over your head.

Your idea of what the GOP has been historically is wrong.

Also...with automation, are we going to be able to effectively monitor what is contained inside these shipping containers?
Seemingly if you automated the unloading operations, you’d have workers to do the monitoring.

That’s what people don’t realize. If you automate something, you create the opportunity to do something more valuable.

Can anyone name a country that has become more successful by banning technology than a country embracing it?

Trump is saying that the efficiency savings is not going to have a more positive affect to offset the negative to all the local economies around the ports. Machines do not eat, do not stop by the local convenience store, by groceries, etc, etc, etc. Blue collar workers spend money in their local economies. As an example, look at what happened when the shipyards closed.
By this “logic” we should ban computers and tractors. Go back to plowing with mules and oxes. Yuge winning! If this works, why isn’t North Korea rich?

His tweet says that savings are minimal to automate.
If that were true, there’d be no incentive to automate.

Is he going to force the railroads to go back to steam locomotives? Bring back cabooses and 5 man crews?
Why not 20 man crews? Would create even more jobs!!

Even better we should hire half the unemployed to dig holes and the other half to fill them up! Tax both at 50% and they’ll pay each other’s salary!

Somebody should tell him that he doesn't need to keep sucking up to the unions the election is over.

That's what you get supporting a guy who flirted with blue collar baws.

That's a communist ideal. Lines have been blurred with the new populism...

He is wrong here. Mostly because he is omiting a key fact. State governments in Union states mandate business owners contract with Unions. It allows people like Genovese associate Harold Dagget too much power.

Actually, that is negotiating, at least according to Trump.

Port “automation” isn’t even a real thing. There will always be a need for humans to do a majority of the work.

So the president and the vice have the same last name, due to its father and son.

You already know it's a scam
