Trump held the call with J.P. Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, Bank of America’s Brian Moynihan and Citigroup’s Michael Corbat, according to people with knowledge of the situation.

The president asked the three men to give him a read on the health of the U.S. consumer, according to one of the people.

The executives responded that the consumer is doing well, but that they could be doing even better if issues including the China-U.S. trade war were resolved, this person said.

I think this is Trump’s #1 concern about his re-election. He’ll do whatever it takes to buoy the market until then.

If Trump gets a solid win on China, the economy is gonna boom even more.

I’m not sure China wants to see that. It’s more likely China drags its feet to get the voters to turn on Trump.

Meaning - this could likely drag in to 2020. Or Trump yields to Chinese demands.

Trump needs to make it so painful for China - that they cant limp to 2020 and they have to cave now.

So Trump basically created a button he can push at any time to make the economy even stronger? Say things take a downturn as the election nears. He announces that a lot of headway has been made, and a group of tariffs will be lifted or relaxed and old markets with China re-opened. The markets suddenly boom with the news. Pretty smart.

WTF are you even talking about?

He could do absolutely nothing new from now until the election and still not have to "buoy" the fricking market.

Can you name a single recession indicator that's not trending positive?

How dare the President of the United States being proactive to get first-hand knowledge about what's going on in the U.S. economy!

That's outrageous!

A legit fair trade deal with China would cause the US economy to take off like a rocket.

No deal but China quits cheating would be a great boon for the US economy.

To get there, though... gonna have to be some pain. Are we committed?

Was there a second call, or is this the conversation that occurred today during their scheduled meeting with Mnuchin?

Trump knows that if the economy tanks he loses. His overall approval rating is consistently no more than 45% with a booming economy which is his major advantage. If he loses that then his re-election hope will hard fade in my opinion.

So create the problem, languish in it for a while and then solve it?

China will not be happy with what he does then
