I said some of you. I'm aware that reasonable Christians exist.

The other part is that this is terrible policy and a blatant overreach on Seperation if Church & State grounds.

100% disagree.

Step back for a moment from the obvious - that the Bible is a religious text meant for those who worship the Judeo-Christian faith. Instead focus on the literary and historical value the Bible provides. The writings found within are thousands of years old and feature some of the most famous stories ever put to pen. They give us valuable insight to what life was like for people at the time the stories were first chronicled. And the Bible itself has influenced the entire history of western civilization and is without a doubt the most important book ever published.

I don't see how this is a violation of the separation of church and state. Will the schools be declaring Christianity the official religion of their school system? If not...there is no 1st Amendment violation here.

I am a firm believer that every public HS should offer an elective in the social studies dept called 'comparative religions'.
It should include Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hindu and Buddhism.
Even an atheist cannot consider himself an intellectual if he is not well versed in these religions and their historical significance.

I agree, that’s alot different than teaching only the Christian Bible as an elective.

Your argument has been that Christianity as practiced should be taught because it improves one's enjoyment of life and makes them a better person. Sex education doesn't teach kids how to better enjoy sex.

My argument has been that the Bible should be allowed to study as long as it's not mandatory.

And frankly, I don’t want my kids taught at public school to read the Bible “like any other book.” There’s a reason my kids go to classes at church.

Teach all religions like it’s mythology and focus on why they can’t be real,

The problem is Christianity/ Bible is being selected as the book of reference. If a State was bringing the Koran into the classsroms the there would be a rightful backlash

Not if it's an elective.

1. bullshite

2. Mandatory versus optional is irrelevant. State resources aren’t supposed to be used to promote one religion over another or religion over non-religion.

And why is the content any more dangerous than any other book?

As my own Pastor has said, biblical interpretation and explanation is relevant. How do you think we have two versions of Catholism, several branches of Protestantism, and Westboro Baptist Church.

This is very shortsighted by Republicans, because once the Democrats have a mandate they will at best abolish it or at worse change the context.

The issue is will it really be an elective. The type of people who are pushing for this will make it mandatory for their kids. And the type of schools offering this were alresdy leaning in that direction.

I hate electives like this just for the same reason I hate "in God we trust" on schools. It is usually used as a distraction from real problems the school has. Particularly in the South.

And they aren't. And as already stated, some schools in the U.S. already have classes in Islam.

This is laughable. The Dems don't care what we think, nor do they think they need a mandate to push their theology on us.
The frikin Libs have been indoctrinating our kids for years!!

This was your first post in the thread:

I know what my first post said, and I certainly stand by it. But if you examine the whole of my post in this thread, the theme is consistent and just as I previously stated. I'm not trying to disguise that I'm Christian.
If the classes aren't mandatory, they should be allowed.

It sure is. This is about indoctrination to you...or spreading the gospel or whatever you call it.

I have a personal mandate to spread the gospel as an individual yes, but I don't think it's the school's job to do so. I just don't think offering the Bible to study as an elective is troublesome.

Slippery Slope implies that something is being tried that has never been tried before. How can it be described as a Slippery Slope to allow the Bible in schools when there is already a rich history of it being done in our past?
