President Trump appeared to endorse efforts by legislators in several states to allow public schools to offer Bible classes.

"Numerous states introducing Bible Literacy classes, giving students the option of studying the Bible. Starting to make a turn back? Great!" Mr. Trump tweeted Monday morning after "Fox and Friends" ran a segment on the topic.

Christian lawmakers in six Republican-controlled state legislatures across the country are pushing for legislation that would allow public schools to offer elective classes on the New and Old Testaments.

quote:

The push by conservative legislators in Florida, Indiana, Missouri, North Dakota, Virginia and West Virginia has stirred some controversy. Critics of the proposals, including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), argue that public school classes on the Bible would jeopardize the separation of church and state enshrined in the First Amendment to the Constitution.

Alabama, Iowa and West Virginia have also considered Bible literacy bills, but all of the measures were voted down, according to the Fox News report.

But in Kentucky, Republican Gov. Matt Bevin signed legislation in 2017 to allow public school students to take Bible and Hebrew scriptures classes. A year ago, in January 2018, the ACLU of Kentucky expressed concern to the Kentucky Board of Education after an Open Records Act investigation found that many courses violated constitutional requirements that say that religious texts used in classrooms must be secular, objective and not promote any specific religious view.

One thing about this is that Trump backs his allies. Trumps very loyal to those that support him. The other part is that this is terrible policy and a blatant overreach on Seperation if Church & State grounds.

How so? It's optional.

Seems like it’s a state and not a federal issue.

It is optional.

Furthermore, as any English teacher can attest, knowing Biblical stories is an IMMENSE benefit when it comes to understanding symbolism and allusions throughout the entire western canon of literature.

Books became much more rewarding and better understood if you read them while knowing where the Christian symbolism is.

The Bible is an extremely important reference book for universal themes, motifs, and messages. Biblical plots, philosophical musings, complex moral questions, they all show up in our masterpieces. In fact, entire novels regarded as classic are actually just remakes of biblical stories

It is up there with Edith Hamilton’s mythology as the most important reference guide to classical literature influences.

Actually it’s probably both?

Odds this doesn’t end up in Federal Court is close to zero.

The problem is Christianity/ Bible is being selected as the book of reference. If a State was bringing the Koran into the classsroms the there would be a rightful backlash.

God forbid that the kids learn about putting the needs of others over their own, self control, turning the other cheek, obeying parents, or any of the other outrageous things found in the Bible.

When you give the authority to the state to teach religion to your children, you lose control of the content of the lessons. They may not teach what you want your kids to learn.

How is allowing the schools to use the Bible as a literary elective any different than any other book?

You are assuming that you know and can control the content and that the content will be predictable.

And frankly, I don’t want my kids taught at public school to read the Bible “like any other book.” There’s a reason my kids go to classes at church.

And why is the content any more dangerous than any other book?

You don’t understand what separation of church and state protects, do you? It doesn’t protect the state. The state has always wanted to control religious teaching. Separation protects the church. The last thing I ever want is for my kids to get their religious education from a state controlled and approved curriculum.

When they are older they can study the Bible “like any other book.” The Bible has a fascinating history which should be studied. By my school aged kids will get their religious education from a church approved curriculum.

I am quite familiar with the entirety of how the Separation Clause came to be and how it's been bastardized.

And again, your kids wouldn't be forced to do anything. It's not mandatory.

Right wing idiocy: when we let the state teach religion to our children, we let a liberal teacher take over our kids’ religious education. Is that what you want?

Right but CAIR gets to implement its anti Islamophobia agenda in the public schools and that's all good

You keep saying this when you know it isn't mandatory. Your point is irrelevant.
Plus, the state already indoctrinates the kids in the religion of secularism.
