Not that free markets are not advantageous over a long enough timeline, but there is clearly evidence that over short terms (1781-1830s, for instance) that targeted temporary protectionism can be a beneficial policy.
Honestly, more to the point.
While I'm pretty much a free market absolutist.........our international partners aren't.
I mean, there's no such thing as a one sided free market.
That said, it's a very slipper game to play because protectionism can be a bit of an opiate. Ya know.......if a little is good, more must be better type thinking.

That report you linked has a map on the very first page which contradicts this pie chart and has Chinese exports of steel to the US higher than all but a few.
In addition, the data showing 'steel imports' is meaningless. By what tariff code? Is this raw bulk sttel or every product made from steel? Manufactured steel beams for construction use, or steel pipe?
All of which is charted differently.

What does this tariff encompass exactly? Do you know if it's inclusive of finished products?

This is the correct answer. If we wanted to target Chinese imports, we would have levied a tariff on....Chinese imports. It is an across the board tariff that also hits Canada, Germany, Japan, and lots of other respectable trading partners. This is about protectionism and nationalism, not punishing China for unfair trade or poor labor conditions.

Second of all China is pretty clearly colored with second tier turquoise and all the countries in the pie chart have the first tier blue except India (which illustrates that India's proportion of steel imports increased between 16-17, not China's)

Not to sound harsh, but why should I have to pay more just so someone who didn't go to college and has minimal work skills can keep a job? It's not my fault they picked the wrong career. They should either take a wage cut in order to stay competitive or find a new career.

No, it wasn't your fault. It was Romney and Bush side of the GOP that lined their pockets. The Gov did it, the Gov should fix it.

I can't say I'm surprised. Trump basically campaigned on a protectionist trade platform. He's delivering on a campaign promise -- something you don't see too often in presidents these days.
All that said, it is still a stupid idea. It may benefit American workers, but it will hurt American consumers and American investors. Personally, it has already cost me quite a bit of money of the last two days.
