Pretty self explanatory.

Not to be a Debbie downer and akshually the place up, but…

It’s called the Gulf of Mexico exactly because the US is the dominant of the two countries. Adjacent seas/gulfs are typically named from the point of view of the more dominant of the two adjacent areas.

For example, Britain and Ireland are divided by the Irish Sea. It’s named that because it’s the body of water and Englishman must travel to get to Ireland. Same with the Tasman sea, and Greenland Sea.

So from an American’s perspective, it’s called the Gulf of Mexico because it’s the body of water you cross to get to Mexico, and that’s why it was named that.

This system doesn’t seem to add up for the various seas around China, but I don’t know what they are called in mandarin, so it’s probably just what the British named it, which would still line up with the other examples.
