If I'm being perfectly honest, I'm getting there too. I'm all for gay marriage but this whole "sue people because they won't make my cake" thing REALLY pissed me off.

Helping. The gay marriage snowball is halfway down the hill and gaining speed. There's not much that will be able to stop it.
But I agree, generally activists for any cause can be insufferable, and the militant gay rights activists are no different. But they'll eventually get what they're fighting for.

helping or hurting their cause?
If their cause is making gay marriage legal, I'd say they've done well. One-issue civil right advocates have always turned off those resistant to the change.

But back to my original question, are they helping or hurting their cause?
they are helping their cause IMHO. Not everyone is a recipient for every message politically. For instance, I am probably not going to listen to a message about christianity taking a back seat in america, and the person giving the message probably DGAF if I hear him. He is trying to target believers and near believers.
Same thing with almost any message.
I do agree that activists can be annoying as anything, regardless of what they are activating (?) for.

I'm nearly there with you. Gay rights activist are some of the looniest people out there. You try to support their cause, but end up scratching your head and wondering what the frick are you doing after some of their antics.

I still support gay rights but some of the individuals who declared themselves spokesmen for America's gays are downright insufferable.
I heard one a few weeks ago declare that his organization was going to commence checking out the backgrounds of every substantial CEO in the country for any anti gay stance in the past.
Its those kind of off-putting tactics that make people care a whole lot less about gays.

hard to have any sympathy for them when they move from "gay rights" to the Gay Reich

Yes, that quiet, respectful, don't ask, don't tell approach worked so well for them for so many years didn't it? The squeaky wheel gets the grease and there has been more progress in the past ten years than in the past two hundred. I'd say they're doing something right and regardless of your opposition out of spite, same-sex marriage will be legal in every state before the end of this decade.

They are hurting it.
And, it's obviously the goal.

Well, lets see.
Roughly 17 states and counting with same sex marriage.
DOMA overturned
DADT overturned
Prop 8 Overturned
1st openly gay active NBA player
1st Openly gay NFL prospect drafted
Arkansas started handing out marriage licenses to same sex couples last Friday
Same sex marriage bans being overturned everywhere you look.
I would say they're definitely doing more harm than good.

I sympathize with gays. They didn't ask for their mental illness and for the most part they are harmless. However, the activists ARE insufferable. And the thought of having to watch them make out with each other on TV makes me want to puke. I suspect I will do a lot of channel changing in the next few years.

An individual or group can achieve success and reach all their goals but go about it in a manner that makes them less popular than if they had employed different tactics.
Barry bonds is in the record books but more or less despised by baseball people for his methods of achieving success.
Success is one thing. Acceptance is another. I think they are hurting themselves on the second front with their "take no prisoners" tactics.

sounds like two dudes decided to come out, and the people got what they voted for. No megaphone accomplished anything on that list

Well with the combination of pop culture glorifying being gay at every turn and how obnoxious gay activists are, its easier to see the opposition as the actual victims rather than gays.
Posted on 5/13/14 at 9:57 am to mauser
most gays are not like the activists. But once you have the liberal shitheels hijack your cause, it becomes annoying.
I like the environment for example, but environmentalism is not even about the environment anymore, it is just rabid anti corporate psychos
