I used to work the NATPE conventions years ago. Many execs that were honest were retiring over 10 years ago, said it(MSM/national tv programming)was all headed for an Blockbuster DVD chainstore esque death..their internal numbers have been bad for far longer than publicly revealed.
They knew that cable-cutters, streaming, podcasts, satellite radio, indie films, R-rated cable series,etc..were gonna kill off their formulaic generic major network programs, CIA/Tell-A-Vision/Operation Mockingbird vehicle.
It was never a case of If, but When. That's why Disney branched from brainwashing moms and kids, to also buying ESPN that bought all sports league programming, etc..
But, as to why the networks started saying the quiet parts out loud, and went full-tilt propagandists, showing their asses, and fast-tracking their own eventual demise..has been bizarre to witness.
