School lunch is 20th century. Your local government indoctrination center is now policing the contents of lunches brought from home and sending food home with the poor kids for the weekend.

You are saying that removing a kid from a parent who is willing to let them starve is worse than leaving the kid there?

I can't agree.

get off my lawn.

in my day, I ate a cheese sandwich for lunch, and I was grateful for it.

You know I didn't say or elude to that and IMO the number of parents that are intentionally starving their kids is EXTREMELY small. Yes there are shitty parents that don't ensure their kids eat properly.....but not all of them are poor.

But removing kids from their "biological units" creates lots of problems; mostly down the road.

The availability of public assistance isn't the problem; the policies in place ARE the problem. They keep people on public assistance to ensure their votes.

Unfortunately life ain't fair or just. Maybe shitty parents need to be publicly shamed until they get their shite together is the answer.

People that can't afford to feed their kids shouldn't have them. But they do anyway. I would like to see something in exchange for supporting their kids. Like using Norplant or something to that effect.

I think there should be real consequences for not feeding your child...especially with the reality that the government ALREADY gives them the means to do so.

Agree.....but what? Removing all the kids ain't the answer bc there's no answer to what to do with them.....take their public assistance away? That won't happen.....put 'em in jail? Nope not that either......public shaming? It's the only thing left but won't happen either bc 'muh feelings' and shite.

I too am not a big proponent of government giveaways, but I am in favor of providing school meals for those who come from families unable to pay for them.
It’s not the child’s fault he was brought into the world, and he/she shouldn’t go hungry because of his parents or parent’s poor choices.

It's a long thread so someone might have informed you.
All kids already get a free lunch. All they have to do is apply.
If your parents make $10M a year you can still get free lunch. The reason for this is that the local school system receives federal funds targeting the poor by counting the number of students on free lunch. So, the more kids in your district on free lunch, the more money you get from the fed.
Therefore, nobody checks to see what your parents make. They encourage you to apply and automatically OK you for free lunch.

180 school days x $2.50 for lunch is $450 a year x 56.6MM students in the U.S.

$25,470,000,000.00

Just for lunch.

Describe these people who aren't able to pay for food and simultaneously aren't being provided food benefits. I don't think they exist.

I think we should give the kids breakfast/lunch in public schools. Having first hand knowledge of 5-6 year old kids go to school and cry of stomach pains, only to find out they are without breakfast and then go home to no supper, it will change your mind regardless of what you think about free handouts. Sure some will abuse the system but others depend on those meals IMO

I see you didn't answer the simple questions I gave you. Shocker.

Why is free lunch a "handout" and why is free school "not a handout"?

quote:

My grandfather paid for lunches of his 11 children , having as many as 8 in school at one time. He was a railroad worker and my grandmother never worked.

Cool, what was lunch then, 5 cents?

They are kids...I mean yeah it sucks that some of them cant depend on their parents to properly feed them but they have literally no fault in that.

Like other people have said, lunch should just be included. We pay for it with our taxes anyway. I mean my kids go to private school but I wouldn't mind being taxed for kids food

Cool story bro.

Now that we are in the real world, let's try to find real answers.

You seem to be overlooking a simple reality.

We already subsidize lunches for kids with parents who can't afford them.

Giving them out for free at school is a double subsidy.
