re: This chart showing the breakdown of NATO spending is crazy

The chart points out the paucity of funding NATO allies pay for their own defense... because they know Uncle Sam is carrying the load.
That's why they can have "free" healthcare and generous social programs.

Socialism is easy when someone else pays the bills.
Europe is so arrogant and high and mighty. Time to STFU.
Let’s see if you can swim.

Nail on the head...
NATO does not benefit the US in any appreciable manner at this point and given the changes in power projection, there is really not a great reason to have much of what we have stationed abroad....
Really past time to relook the whole NATO thing... However if given the choice, I would like to see the US pull the plug on the UN before pulling the plug on NATO...

Surprised by canada.
In what way? Their per capita spending looks to be about the same as the UK.

We are everyone’s bodyguard, but they do pay us quite a bit. It’s just that those Americans who are being paid are a select few. All of these NATO countries have to buy American defense products. This is a huge injection of foreign purchases into the American economy. Also, we get all kinds of trade deals, on items from bananas to sulphur, that drive the American cost of living down.
The average American benefits from these deals by having cheap foreign goods available and by seeing his stock portfolio go up when defense contractors, oil companies, and other multi-nationals’ stocks go up.
But these benefits accrue disproportionately to the rich. THAT is Trump’s critique. He cloaks it in strident language about America getting screwed, because that sells and is easy for most to understand, but he knows the truth of it. It is about changing the slant of the playing field IN America, not between America and the world.

his completely misses the point. The reality is that's been the gimmick the whole time. Individual countries from NATO can claim to be relatively equal contributors when the reality is they are all living under our defense umbrella. They are able to spend next to nothing on their military's for only one reason and that's the existence of the United States.
Good points!
But NATO is just basically a cover for Europe...
we police the entire world, that's why our defense budget is what it is..
What does China spend?
What does Israel spend?
What does Russia Spend?
What does Japan spend? Oh Right! forgot about that one, we do that
You have entire middle east...
So yeah, NATO is kind of a joke because we seem to go a lot of things alone
and you can bet most inside our goverment prefer it that way

Yes. This doesn't get talked about enough.

Is this accurate? Last night there was a thread that said we paid $860B and the person who said that was mocked by several leftists.

Cut our contribution in half. Still would be more than the rest combined. Good start.

In the other category, throw in Spain. And trow Canada into Europe. That's who they want to be.

Trump asked Hegseth to find 8% in cuts this year. And then again next year I think.

yep, and why would they pay? Our government officials are only concerned about self enrichment, as long as they get theirs they dont ask questions. Its actually disgusting and its been going on for a very long time. Only thing I hope for is the current administration can at least undo the majority of it and prosecute enough people to make it difficult to do in the future
