Do you understand the term "buyers market"?
The U.S. is the largest market in the world for expensive items.
You have to see it from that standpoint, and realize the power that it provides.
Foreign Companies will trade their children to stay in the U.S. Market.

I’m just separating mocking OP from my economic positions.

There's no question China is stealing intellectual property, but thinking putting tariffs on their imports is going to force a deal to have them join any of the treaties and discourage stealing the intellectual property is laughable.
They have legions of hackers that steal trade secrets as well, but again, putting tariffs on their imports will not force China into trying to prevent it.
They'll just go elsewhere.
We'll see who can last longer

How about leaving less stuff in public records (like patents) that can be duplicated?
So while there is no question China actively steals intellectual property, it is evident you attribute the theft to simple carelessness. Were that the case, every other country in the world would benefit from the same sloppiness. Given such an erroneous precept, one can understand your lax attitude in forcing different Chinese practices.

I still don't know the logic that putting tariffs on China is going to force them to enter into a deal for intellectual property.
The tariff costs will just get passed on to the consumer.
I hope you guys go and purchase some more Make America Great Again hats before the skyrocket in price due to these tariffs.

China has been absolutely fricking us with completely unfair trade practices, uneven access to markets, requirements for local partnerships that give them access to trade secrets in order to do business in China, outright industrial espionage, price fixing, dumping, etc, etc, etc.. the idea that you can have fair and open trade under these circumstances is completely moronic. Free market factors do not work here because one side is using the peer of the state to manipulate every aspect of the relationship. We needed someone willing to unfrick our circumstances with China for the last 20 years.

The oil industry in a large part doesn't use Chinese steel in their facilities. Many AML's state "No Chinese steel".

We certainly will go elsewhere. India, Korea, Taiwan, etc.
Hell, it might even cost US consumer 5% more.
Meanwhile, where will China find another Half-Trillion dollar per year purchaser?

It's weird , you admit there is a problem, hate this remedy , and provide no alternate approach.
Is your recommendation to just accept it?
If so, get the frick out of the way.

Not that low and the low break evens don’t apply across the board and higher steel costs will raise breakevens across the industry.

They use Chinese steel for pipe and casing...and in many cases it’s not cost, it’s that very few US mills produce to the required specs.
