The terms these hollow heads like to bandy about ("weapon of war"; "common sense gun laws" etc. etc. etc) have absolutely no definition and can mean ANYTHING!
For much of human history a short sword or tomahawk was the preferred "weapon of war". If one is willing to mix it up... aggressively using a gladius type stabbing sword in a crowd would cause massive damage.

An assault rifle is a real term.
It is defined as a fully automatic, medium range cartridge rifle that is carriable for an assaulting soldier. Bigger than an SMG, while smaller than a traditional squad machine gun.
Those are already illegal for common sale due to the 1986 machine gun ban.
