do we need common sense utensil regulation?

No joke: in the UK, butterknives are registered. They are a bunch of bloody lunatics.

There is such thing as an assault rifle but by definition it’s a firearm that can switch from semi automatic fire to automatic fire. The vast majority of US gun owners do not own an assault rifle. A lot of people own semi automatic rifles.
100% accurate.

The anti gun crowd does need to come up with a new term because every time they call a semi automatic rifle an assault weapon they just show their ignorance.
You are naive, if you think that their policymakers do not understand this distinction. They use "assault rifle" (knowing that it is wrong) because they ALSO know that it is effective rhetoric for their target audience.

These threads get started constantly: some baw feels the need to show the city slickers they don't know shite about firearms.

Truthfully, most city-slickers don't know anything about firearms.

Even more truthfully, the Democrats pushing gun control REALLY don't know about firearms.

AR does not stand for "assault rifle". It stands for ARmalite Rifle,

I have a couple of those also.

Guess what? Neither has been responsible for a mass shooting.

There's actually no such thing as a non-assault rifle.

I.e., any rifle is an assault rifle when used to create an imminent fear of serious bodily harm.

And the Founding Fathers were well aware that this is true of all "arms" when they drafted and adopted the 2A.

Anti-gun-rights people may be less intellectually honest than the anti-life crowd. They're usually the same people so that's a moot ranking.

Also imaginary terms
climate crisis,
hate crime,
cis gender,
systemic racism (in the 21st-century).
(Insert word here) justice. Other than equal

Of course this is exactly right and I am surprised you are getting so much pushback.

And, to an earlier poster, "storm" can mean the same thing as "assault." "They stormed the fort" or "They assaulted the fort."

This is completely true, but Dems try to use scary words to alarm weak arse beta citizens...

Hence my philology comment.

BJ knows this. He just finds that sort of exchange entertaining. I don't mind it from him, as it is done in good humor.

A LOT of posters here do not like me. I tend to post facts and opinions that they do not want hear, because they conflict with the prevailing narrative of this forum. It is what it is.

That's complete bullshite. Even the Army's new XM5 to replace the M4's is a not bullpup. Bullpups suck, the manual of arms to change magazines sucks, the triggers suck, clearing malfunctions suck. Out side of the British and Israelis, most militaries do not issue bullpup rifles. France is ditching the FAMAS for HK416's currently.

As for the OP: Assault Rifle is a technical term, the US military gives it a distinct meaning as does the term Battle Rifle. Assault Weapon is a non-technical, amorphous, politically loaded term. That's why proposed laws state Assault Weapon (e.g. the The Assault Weapons Ban of 1994), because if they stated Assault Rifle then they would be bound to the specific legal definition of a rifle.

Liberals love to believe that AR stands for assault rifle. I told my communist uncle that mine was a Kalashnikov and he fell for it.
