But the standard practical translation of Sturmgewehr has been "assault rifle" since about 1950 ... long predating the current gun control controversy.

I don't want to go off on a philology tangent, but if you speak any language other than English, you know that a word-for-word translation VERY OFTEN does not convey the same meaning in both languages.
If you translate "que horas son?" to English word-for-word (what are the hours?), no one would have any idea that you were trying to ask "what time is it?"

There is such thing as an assault rifle but by definition it’s a firearm that can switch from semi automatic fire to automatic fire. The vast majority of US gun owners do not own an assault rifle. A lot of people own semi automatic rifles. The anti gun crowd does need to come up with a new term because every time they call a semi automatic rifle an assault weapon they just show their ignorance.
